Object type: HAMMER
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Iron hammer head, with a circular eye (diameter 22mm) set within a slight expansion of the head. The striking face, which is slightly rounded and burred, is rectangular and is balanced by a sub-rectangular cross-pane, which is also slightly burred. Length 116.5mm, maximum width 45mm, maximum thickness 33.5mm, dimensions of striking head 34mm x 34mm, dimensions of cross-pane 28mm x 29mm. The hammer head is uncertain. The form of craftsmen's tools remained constant from the late, pre-Roman Iron Age through to the early twentieth century. Consequently, unless recovered from a demonstrably…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of a probable iron axe, with an oval eye set within a notably wide expansion. Half of the eye, the poll and the end of the blade are missing. The front face of the surviving part of the blade is straight, while the rear, although initially straight, begins to curve back, presumably to form a wide cutting edge. Unfortunately, the loss of the front of the blade prevents confirmation of this suggestion. The thickness of the blade narrows towards the missing cutting edge suggesting that, when complete, the blade had a triangular longitudinal section. Surviving length 159mm, maximu…

One-sided lead, or lead alloy (pewter) token. It is crudely made and was probably cast. Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Crudely cast lead, or lead alloy, figurine of a cloaked figure standing on a pedestal and with their arms gathered across their chest. The casting is flat on the back. The surface of the figure is corroded making it difficult to identify distinguishing features, and the neck of the figure has been damaged resulting in the head being artificially bowed forward. Length 88mm, maximum width 31mm, maximum thickness 14mm, weight 163.6 grams. Identification and dating of the figurine is difficult and an extensive literature search has failed to raise any close parallels for the piece. In term…

Cast lead, or lead alloy, discoidal weight. Romano-British, copper alloy Colchester derivative brooch of the Polden Hills type. The brooch contains a bilateral spring of ten coils whose overhead chord is held in place by a simple rearward-facing hook. A copper alloy axis bar passes through the coils of the spring and is held by pierced circular plates at the ends of the wings (cf. Type L Hattatt 1982, 49, table 2). Silver sterling penny of Edward IV (1461-70, 1471-83) from the York Episcopal mint of Archbishop George Neville (1465-1476). Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy finger-ring. The finger-ring is decorated with three projecting knobs, which are surrounded by a series of notches on the hoop. The projecting knobs are cast in one with the hoop and the notched grooves are probably also cast features. External diameter 20mm, internal diameter 16mm, weight 3 grams. Its general form is unlike the known rings of the prehistoric, Roman and early medieval period and the basis of this negative evidence it is probably medieval or early post-medieval in date. The decoration is similar to that used on a type of finger-ring known as a decade ring (…
