Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of whetstone of unknown date. Description: The object is made from a fine-grained, quartz-rich sandstone, is sub-square in section and broken across both ends. There is also some post-depositional damage to all surfaces. Measurements: Length 54.32mm: Width 28.31mm: Thickness 25.87mm: Weight 64.48g Discussion: Dating of whetstones is difficult as they were used from the later Iron Age to modern times. The location and associated finds suggest an early-medieval to early post-medieval date.

A cast copper-alloy and iron object of unknown date and function. Description: The object consists of a very corroded iron shank with a circular, cast copper-alloy collar 10.5mm in height and 17.7mm in diameter approximately one third along the length of the shank. The corrosion of the iron masks any detail but it comes to a blunt point at each side of the collar, the longer section being square-shaped in section, the shorter section rectangular in section. The longer section has a short, projecting, pointed stub just below the lower edge of the collar. The copper-alloy collar i…

The left valve of an oyster shell with a central perforation. Description: The perforation has been made from the inside of the shell to the outside and is 14mm x 15mm with three staight sides and one outwardly-curved side. The perforation has been made carefully with minimal damage to the shell and, along with the precise shape, suggests it was made deliberately rather than through accidental damage. Measurements: 79.52mm in length, 75.06mm in width and 46.07g in weight. Discussion: Perforated oyster shells are found in many archaeologicaly-secure contexts dating from the Ro…

A copper-alloy object of uncertain date, probably an ear ring. The object is made from a single length of copper-alloy wire, twisted along its length and then formed into two circles, one 19.3mm in diameter and one 5.8mm in diameter, by twisting and then soldering the two ends together at the base of the larger loop. A cast lead object of unknown date and function. The object is cylindrical and has been crudely sharpened at one end to form a blunt point. Towards the opposite end are two, incised, circumferential grooves and there are numerous parallel striations running along the length of the object. Just off-centre of the long sides, a hole has been drilled from opposite sides to create an hourglass profile. The hole is 4.3mm in diameter. The date and function of the object are unknown but it bears a close resemblence to a large bullet or shot that has been modified, possibly into a toggle for f…

A cast lead-alloy object of unknown date and function. The object consists of two circular discs joined by a narrow, central column, 3.95mm in diameter. The discs are biconvex and the central column is hexagonal in section. Both discs are undecorated but there are the remains of a circular-sectioned iron projection, 2mm in diameter, exiting the centre of the lower disc, possibly the remains of a pin shank. This may be an elaborate pin head or a decorative stud but it's function remains unconfirmed.

A cast copper-alloy mount or stud of unknown date. It is sub-pyramidal with a base that is concave in one plane only but more so at one side than the other. It seems likely that this was to allow it to seat against something curved and tapering. The more concave side has a shallow, linear notch running in from the edge across the base for about 3mm. The pointed tip is not central and leans slightly away from this notched edge. Close to the bottom edge there is a transverse, incised line around three sides, but not the side with the notch.
