Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Lincolnshire

A cast copper-alloy mount or stud of unknown function. The object is conical in plan with a sub-circular base and rounded tip. There is a circumferential groove running around the object approximately 3.5mm from the base. Cut into the centre of the base is a square hole with iron staining suggesting that this was the means of attachment using an iron fixing. The patination and style of the object suggest an Iron Age -Roman date and that fits with other objects found at the site. It measures 13.25mm in height with a basal diameter of 19mm. It weighs 12.92g.

A large fragment of Iron bloomery slag. The fragment is rich in iron with iron corrosion products over parts of its surfaces. It strongly attracts a magnet. The fragment also contains a large number of air bubbles and is heavy for its size. One side has a distinct, smooth curved profile which may be where the bloom was shaped by the inner wall of the furnace. The process of smelting iron ore to produce iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period.

A copper-alloy ring of uncertain date and function. There are several such objects recorded on the database, their dating being problematic. They also, probably, served a variety of functions. The small size and wear patterns of this object suggest it may be a bead. The object was found in association with other objects of, primarily, Iron Age and Roman date so a date of this period seems likely. The ring has a convex outer surface and slightly flattened inner surfaces. Both the width and the thickness of the ring decrease significantly at one point, possibly as a result of wear from …

An incomplete, cast, copper-alloy brooch of the "Birdlip" type dating to the late Iron Age/early Roman period. An incomplete, 1st Century AD, griffin-headed terminal from a fixed vessel handle. The original vessel would have had a mirror image terminal on the opposite side, joined by an omega-shaped handle. Only the stub of the handle survives on this example and the head of the griffin is also missing. The front face of the terminal is decorated with punched crecents possibly representing the feathers on the neck of the creature. The rear face of the terminal is slightly concave in both horizontal and vertical axes to ensure a close fit to the wall of a large vessel. The…
