Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead disc with a flower design on a latticed background and a small but visible suspension loop at the top. There is also 18.49mm long pin on the reverse for sewing the badge to a garment. There does not appear to be any religious connotation to the design so this must be a secular badge but it does have a back pin very similar to many pilgrim badges. This suggests that it dates from the same period as these 14th-15th century souvenirs

A worked flint flake, There are at least three scars from previous blades that have been struck from it so it has, been struck from a blade core. It's size suggests maybe a rejuvenation flake to create a new striking platform on the core. There doesn't seem to be any further reworking on the flake so it was probably discarded and the core carried on being used for blades.

The upper part of an incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch. The way this object flares out into a flatish oval from which projects the stub of perforated lug to anchor the spring suggests that this may be part of a trumpet headed type. Whether the iron corrosion around the comes from an iron spring of just from burial close to an iron object is uncertain.

A copper alloy horse harness pendant of Medieval date. The pendant is cruciform in plan with four swelling projections from a central square, which in turn extend into narrow arms terminating in faceted rectangles. A copper alloy horse harness pendant of Medieval date. The pendant is circular in plan. Its suspension loop extends upwards from the top of the pendant and is pierced horizontally. The pendant is incomplete with part of the lower section missing. The nature of any surface detail is unclear due to corrosion. Several pendants bearing similar forms are illustrated by Ashley (2002: 18: Fig. 20, Cat. 183-88) and Griffiths in Clark (1995: 65 Fig. 47, Cat. 57). Parallels may also be drawn with BH-13BBA1. A cast strip of copper alloy, D shaped in section, bent over at one end and curved at the other as if to make a hook that has broken off. The curved face of the strip has an evenly executed, moulded spiral pattern running along it but stopping just before each end of the object where it also tapers slightly. The strip doed not appear to be a bracelet that hes been straightened by plough damage, it is robustly made and looks as if it was cast straight. Two Roman coins found in the same field on the same day are recorded on the database: BUC-3BD2C0 & BUC-3B9E57. These suggest that it m…
