James Robinson of the British Museum writes: "A Medieval silver gilt terminal or mount in the shape of a male bearded figure issuing from two sprigs of foliage. The beard is forked. The back of the mount is entirely flat and without gilding, and may have been designed to lie flush with the surface of a box or book- cover.The mount dates from the late 14th or the 15th century."
Geoff Egan also noted (pers comm)"The back, suggests traditional silversmithing manufacture with what look like traces of ripple marks from having been cast in a cuttlefish-bone mould.
