Silver radiate of Otacilia Severa, dating to AD 244-9 (Reece Period 12).
Obverse: MARC OTACI SEVERA AVG; Draped and diademed bust right on crescent
Reverse: PIETAS AVG N; Pietas standing left, holding globe and transverse sceptre; on left, child standing
RIC IV, pt 3, p. 84, no. 134
Note: the obverse legend has OTACI instead of the normal OTACIL as noted in RIC. However, the RIC plate coin (pl 7, no. 19) is also OTACI suggesting that this might be the normal reading for this particular issue. This appears to be confirmed by the presence of three of these coins in …

Fragmentary contemporary copy of an East Anglian thrymsa plated in very pale gold, a Trophy type, obverse bust left, star and annulets in front, reverse a trophy derivative. A base coin can be seen on the broken edge. Importantly, this coin is an obverse die duplicate to an example from Billockby, Norfolk (Marsden 2016, 58, no. 20); the reverse is from a disfferent die. The fact that this example is plated strongly suggests that the Billockby example might also, in fact, be a plated copy. The Billockby coin has a Runic inscription on the obverse - none of this coin's reverse legend ca…

Copper alloy radiate of Carausius, an early type perhaps related to the EXPECTATE VENI issues but with the typology altered so that a togate figure of Carausius standing right grasps hands with a draped female figure standing left, with a hitherto unrecorded exergue signature of M.C. and (as is usual) no field marks, obverse [...]ARAVSIVS[...], radiate bust right, reverse [...]I, emperor greeting female, approximately 17mm diameter, weight 3.49g, c.AD286-7. Sam Moorhead writes: No EXPECTATE VENI coins are recorded for the MC mark. This coin is probably a CONCORDIA MILITVM or related i…

Copper alloy nummus of Crispus (AD 317-26), perhaps irregular but of very good style and carrying a mint signature (-//TT) appropriate to Ticinum. The reverse type of BEATA TRANQVILLITAS, Globe on altar, inscribed VOTIS XX, with three stars above, is attested at London, Lyons and Trier and is mentioned in RIC VII (pp.358 and 380note), but strangely not listed in the catalogue as a type issued at Ticinum. Presumably we are dealing here with a very rare official issue that did not advance much beyond the prototype stage. The plain bowl on the helmet worn by Crispus and the obverse legen…

Circular lead weight of Early Medieval date set with a Northumbrian styca. The weight is approximately 16.5mm in diameter, approximately 6mm high at its highest point and weighs (with the coin) 11.36g. The styca, which comes loose, is a crude issue which appears to be in the name of Redwulf, king of Northumbria c.844-58 although it is probably a mid-9th century derivative issue (North, p.72, no. 189ff). It weighs 1.10g. The weight, with such an inset, is a typically Viking type and probably dates to the second half of the 9th century.
