Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount of post-Medieval date. The mount consists of two plates of roughly equal form, joined by a pair of folded tabs (now broken) at the top. Below this, the plates are bulbous, the surface of the upper plate decorated by a series of chevron-shaped grooves. Below, the plates narrow before terminating in a tri-lobate base. The grooved decoration continues into this lower section. On the upper plate, one of the outer basal lobes is replaced by a projecting loop. The two sides of the piece would have been held together by two iron rivets, corroded remnants of which survi…

A copper-alloy openwork mount of post-Medieval (probably 17th century) date. The mount takes the form of a flower. At its top, the central stalk terminates in a ring-shaped head with central pellet. This is set between a 'V-shaped' arrangement of leaves, at the base of which is a pointed projection, set at a right angle to the stalk. The corroded surface retains traces of gilding. On the flat underside of the mount are two integrally cast rivets of circular section. Both of these rivets have been deliberately bent inwards, the lower one being incomplete. Dimensions: 23mm long, 20.…

A copper-alloy end-cap from an early post-Medieval knife. The lower portion of the cap comprises a block, which is of oval section, the outer surfaces divided in two by a deep, 'V-shaped' groove, flanking which are a number of angled grooves. A deep groove extends vertically upwards from the centre of the flat underside and represents the point of attachment for the now-missing knife tang. The oval-sectioned block is surmounted by a pair of outward-facing zoomorphic heads. Each of these heads has a deeply grooved mouth, concave-surfaced snout and a moulded brow, at either end of whi…
