Upper part of a late Medieval Stirrup; the strap bar, strap bar cover and small stubs of the sides survive; the rest is lost to old breaks.The front (strap cover) is trapezoid, narrowed at the top than bottom. It is decorated with transverse grooves at the top, and further grooves at the base. A narrow strap bar runs behind forming a rectangular opening. The arms located at either side are incomplete.
Similar stirrups, in both copper-alloy and iron, have been found in excavations in London. Clark suggests a 14th century date for the group (1995; pp. 71). A very similar example c…

'U' shaped arm from a cast copper-alloy medieval 'locking buckle'. The arm would have attached to the pin bar. The arm is oval in cross-section at the bend and then tapers to a circular sectioned shank. The terminal has a solid bulbous knop.
Such buckles are well attested in the literature; recent published examples can be found illustrated in Egan (2005, 37-38; refs. 116, 117), which includes a reconstruction drawing. See also HAMP-9CF8A6 (this database) for a more complete example.

A late Early Medieval/early Medieval mount. The mount was recorded in an unclean state as shown in the image. The mount appears to be in the form of a facing animal head, perhaps a bear. There are two large ears at the top; the bear has two large eyes and snout. Below is a slender 'body' and two arms that appear to be held up as if he is holding the side of his head with his hands. There is a large knop in the centre of the body near the base, perhaps representing a belly-button. The mount is broken below this across what appears to be two open circles. The mount has a reddish patina.
