The circular stone is most probably the lower section of a quern, dating it is however, a tad difficult as this type of rotary quern, introduced to Britain by the Romans remained in common use throughout the ages, certainly up to and beyond the late medieval. Typically, a thick round stationary lower stone in which there is normally a socket for a spindle, sat on the ground and a rotating upper stone sat over the lower stone.
