Cast lead spindle whorl, plain disc, one face having a more rounded edge than the other. Central hole 9.8mm diameter. This object is difficult to date, its simple form being in use over a long period of time. Parallels can be found from Roman and Anglo-Saxon contexts and it is possible that the type continued in use into the Medieval period alongside the biconcal form. The site from which this example came has produced finds of both Roman and Medieval date.

A complete cast lead spindle-whorl, probably of medieval or early post-medieval date, c. 1250-1700 AD .The whorl is plano-convex but relatively flat, with a central perforation of 8.8mm diameter. It measures 27.4mm in diameter, has a thickness of 8.9mm,and weighs 40.4g. It is in good condition.
Although there are some similar lead spindle whorls known from the early-medieval period, there are far more medieval examples known, so they are generally dated as broadly medieval. The drop spindle with which they were used went out of use early in the post-medieval period at the latest.
