A complete cast lead-alloy probable spindle whorl or discoidal weight, possibly dating to the Medieval period, c. 1100-1500. The object is broadly biconical (truncated) in cross-section and sub-circular in form, with a circular central aperture. No decoration is visible on either surface of the object, and nor do the edges of the piece display the generally characteristic prominent circumferential ridge that is generally found on most more refined types of spindle whorl. In appearance, the object is rather crude and if not a spindle whorl then it is likely to be some sort of crude h…

A complete cast lead spindle whorl dating to the medieval period, c. 1100-1500. The whorl is biconical (truncated) in cross-section and circular in form, with a wide circular central aperture. Around the middle of the whorl at its widest point, a prominent circumferential ridge is visible. Both surfaces of the object demonstrate moulded decoration in relief, comprising a series of five radiating lines which divide each face of the whorl into segments, in each of which is a single pellet. The whorl measures a maximum of 29mm in diameter, is 9mm thick at its widest point, and the diam…

A lead spindle whorl, probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, AD 1100-1650. It is flat and circular in shape, with a central circular perforation of internal diameter 11.8mm. The top surface is decorated with four raised, off-set, overlaid triangular ridges centred on the hole, to create a pattern of a 12-point star. The underside is flat and undecorated with a shallow circular depression or groove around the hole. The whorl has a cream coloured patina. It is 26.95mm in diameter and 10.5mm thick on one edge tapering to 8.5mm on the opposite edge. It weighs 19.76g. A number of f…

A complete, but crudely cast lead spindle whorl or weight of the Roman to post-medieval period, dating from AD 43-1600. The diameter is 20.07mm and the central hole is relatively large, 10.83mm in diameter. The top and bottom surfaces of the whorl are rough and uneven, although it is difficult to tell whether this is a result of careless manufacture or corrosion. The sides are thin, tall and very slightly tapering, so in side view the whorl or weight is a slightly tapering rectangle 9.89mm thick. It is a light grey in colour. Spindle whorls, as an artefact type, can be hard to date…

Crudely cast lead spindle whorl (or possibly a lead weight) of uncertain date, but Roman to Post Medieval is most likely (AD 43-1600). It is irregular in shape, sub-square or sub-circular, with a flat top and bottom (around the holes) giving a roughly rectangular cross-section. The lead has a creamy white patina. The central hole is of straight sides and measures 12.10mm. Diameter 31.10mm, Thickness 20.82mm, Weight 104.7g. Compare another very irregular whorl or weight, LIN-851A59.

Lead cast plano-convex spindle-whorl of uncertain date. It is circular, with a shallow domed face above and a flat underside. The central circular hole is 6.11mm in diameter with straight sides for most of its length, widening at the top to 10mm diameter. The lead has a grey patina. Diameter 34.28mm, height 9.75mm, weight 60.7g. The shape of the spindle whorl corresponds with Coppergate type A1 (Walton Rogers, 2007) which were used in various materials from the 6th century onwards. A lead whorl of this shape, however, is more likely to be medieval or post-medieval. Compare YORYM-B…

A complete lead cast weight, perhaps a spindle whorl, of uncertain date. It is circular, 23.06mm in diameter, with a large central hole of diameter 10mm. In side view it is flat and 3.84mm thick. The lead has a creamy/grey patina. Weight 9.5g. Lead weights of this type are notoriously difficult to date with any accuracy. Most similarly shaped examples on the PAS database are decorated whorls of medieval date, but without any decoration they may be anything from Roman to post-medieval in date (AD 43-1700). Compare KENT-8E8048 and NARC-FFB1C7.

A crudely cast lead plano-convex spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is roughly circular, with an uneven, lumpy and pitted shallow domed face, and a flat reverse. The central hole is roughly circular and measures 9.07mm in diameter. The lead has a pale grey patina. Diameter 24.55mm, thickness 7.76mm, weight 20.09g. This mis-shapen circular spindle whorl corresponds with Coppergate type A1 (Walton Rogers, 2007) which were used in various materials from the 6th century onwards. Micaceous argillaceous shale spindle whorl, ranging from pink to light brown in colour with a sparkling surface from the mica inclusions. The whorl is oval in plan and flat in profile, with smooth parallel faces, and a slightly off-centre tapering depression in each face which do not meet in the middle and perforate the stone. On one face the depression is 2 mm in diameter and 3 mm deep and the other depression on the opposite face is 4 mm in diameter and 2 mm deep. The depressions have been deliberately drilled from each face but not completed so that the spindle whorl was never used…

An incomplete stone flat or discoidal spindle whorl, of Neolithic to Medieval dating (BC 3500 - AD 1900). Around 75% of the spindle whorl is present. Both faces of the spindle whorl are flat and undecorated; a circular perforation runs through the the centre, presumably for attachment to a wooden spindle (now missing). The spindle whorl is made from a fine-grained sandstone. The whorl is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile, with parallel faces. The central hole is sub circular in shape and has been drilled slightly off central, from both sides. The internal diameter of the…

A stone spindle whorl of possible medieval date. It is of flattened biconvexform, higher in one half than the other. The circumference is also flattened. The fabric is fine grained and of light-grey colour. It features incised concentric decoration in the form neat concentric rings (turning lines) on both surfaces. The central hole measures c. 8.1mm in diameter. On the higher half the object has suffered a loss adjacent to the hole. The stone is calcareous and probably a siltstone/mudstone.
