A complete ceramic spindle whorl of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The spindle whorl is fashioned from a reused piece of greyware ceramic and is circular with a central perforation running through it. The edges are slightly beveled. The object is 37.1mm in diameter, 10.1mm thick and weighs 14.6g. The perforation is 14.6mm in diameter.

Medieval, c. AD1200-1500, lead spindle whorl, low-biconical, one face bears a pattern of raised angled lines, the other rows of raised pellets. Around the outer edge is a low flange. An incomplete spindle whorl, made from a very worn and fragmentary medieval lead papal bulla of Pope Clement V (1305 to 1314). The obverse bears the legend CLE / [MEN]S / [:PP] V within a beaded border. The reverse depicts the faces of St Peter and St Paul below the inscription SPASP[E] (SPA = Sanctus Paulus, SPE = Sanctus Petrus), all of which are surrounded by the remains of a beaded border. An incomplete biconical lead spindle whorl, which has been cut; only half survives. The surfaces of the piece are decorated with regularly spaced raised lines, radiating from what was once a central perforation, to its outer edge. The metal has a pale grey or white patina. It has a diameter of 32.4mm, is 16.9mm thick and weighs 35.0g. The perforation was once 9.5mm in diameter. Decorated lead spindle whorls date to the medieval period, c. 1200-1500 AD.

Cast lead spindle whorl of possible Early Medieval (720-850) date. The whorl is plan-convex with a slighly concave underside. Through it is a 7.0 x 5.0 centrally set, hole. Its face bears a pattern of angled, raised bar and the intention might have been to suggest runes although no coherent letters can be defined. Diameter 30.0mm, Height 15.4mm, Mass 53.32g. Medieval to Post Medieval lead spindle whorl, c. AD1300-1600. Biconical but one side is much less raised than the other, the raised face continuing into a short cylinder. Both faces are decorated with raise dots, separated by raised, angled lines on the more raised face and for radial lines on the other. The hole in the centre of the whorl is 10.0mm in diameter. Lead whorls are not easy to date, as few are found in excavated contexts, perhaps because they were far easier to recycle than whorls of bone, stone or pottery.
