A Roman to post medieval ceramic spindle whorl, dating tot he period c. AD 43-1700. The spindle whorl is circular in plan, with a central aperture measuring 7.68mm. The fabric is light brown in colour with a pitted surface in places. Faint ridges are present around its circumference. The spindle whorl measures 25.83mm in diameter, 17.10mm in thickness and weighs 13.95g.

An inscribed lead spindle dating to the early 11th century. The whorl is trapezoid in cross-section and roughly circular in plan. An hour-glass shaped hole has been drilled through the centre, measuring circa 8mm diameter at the opening. The whorl is inscribed on the side and base with Norse runes. Dr. John Hines (Cardiff University) has examined the whorl. He writes: In late summer of 2010 a lead spindle-whorl with a Norse runic inscription was found at Saltfleetby St Clement, Lincolnshire. Probable Roman ceramic spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is roughly circular and is made out of a body sherd from a greyware vessel. There is a centrally drilled hole 6.67mm in diameter. The hole has been drilled from the reverse.
