Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Medieval - Post Medieval period, between AD 1400 - 1600 (diameter: 25.5mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 26.4g).
This spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 8.5mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact appears to be faintly decorated on both sides with possible linear and pellet decoration, although the artefact is too worn to identify this clearly. The spindle whorl is in a worn and poor condition.

Ceramic spindle whorl diameter 31mm, height 17mm, weight 14.23g. The artefact is conical shaped with slightly convex sides, there are four concentric lines on the top surface and two on the underside. 10mm in diameter in the centre, light grey fabric.
The ceramic used for the spindle whorl is similar to the fabric of grey were vessels from the Roman Period, therefore a roman date is ascribed.

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a pattern of dots and lines in relief. The lines divide each ring-shaped surface in ca. ten crudely designed but equally-sized cells, five of which show a central design of an 'arrow' or 'heart', while the remaining five cells show two dots set above each other vertically.
The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or t…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is very crudely decorated on both sides: while one side shows a crude pattern of criss-crossing lines in relief, the other shows at least one circle of dots around the central perforation. There may be two more circles of dots - one closer to the perforation, the other closer to the rim -, but they are not as clear at the central ring.
The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sin…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a simple ring-and-dot motif: however, whilst there are six ring-and-dots on one side, the other shows only four.
The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or to weigh down cloth (table cloths, curtains, etc). Similar items found in archaeological contexts have been dated to ca. AD1400-1600.

Middle Saxon/Late Saxon stone spindle whorl, fine-grained pale-grey limestone plano-convex with central perforation within three engraved concentric grooves on the upper surface and two on the base. Diameter 35mm, weight 26.01g. Cf. Late Saxon example from Thetford (Rogerson and Dallas 1984, fig.148, no.4) and broadly similar but more deeply grooved Middle Saxon example from grave 28 at Harford Farm (Penn 2000, 29 and fig.94, no.4 and plate VI).

Lead bi-conical spindle whorl with a central circular perforation. It is circular in plan although there are some bits of corrosion attached to the edges. It is worn so the decoration cannot be seen very clearly. It has been decorated on both sides in relief with zig-zag lines and dots.
Spindle whorls are hard to date precisely as they were used for a long period of time. Therefore this find has been dated broadly to the Medieval period.

A lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl is conical with a truncated top. There is a large circular hole through the centre. It has a diameter of 24.7mm and is 11.6mm thick. It weighs 27.5g. The whorl is in good condition with a white patina, but has been varnished.
Helen Geake writes: “Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, “The Medieval Household: Daily Living c1150 – c1450”; and Biddle, 1990, “Object and Economy in Medieval Winchester”), and…

A complete cast lead medieval spindle whorl. The biconical spindle whorl has a slightly raised rim around the edge and a central circular perforation with a diameter of 11.9mm. One face is decorated with single radiating lines in a star formation with pellets in between. The other face is quite worn and has a similar design but with triple radiating lines. The external diameter is 36.5mm, the thickness is 9.9mm and the weight is 45.45g.

Cast lead spindle whorl. Circular, domed spindle whorl with irregular circular hole through the centre. Decorated on both sides with a single line in relief forming a 4-pointed star shape.
Diameter 29.7mm, thickness 10.0mm, weight 40.50g
Spindle whorls are difficult to date since they were used in a very similar form for many centuries. This could therefore be from any period from Roman to early post medieval.

A cast lead spindle whorl of Medieval date, c. 1200-1500.
The spindle whorl is biconical with a circular hole through the middle. Each face is decorated with six panels distinguished by a raised line from the hold to the central ridge, each panel bearing three raised/domed dots arranged in a triangular fashion. The spindle whorl has been cast poorly, as the decoration is interrupted by irregularities from the mould.

A cast lead spindle whorl of Medieval date, c. 1200-1500.
The spindle whorl is a miscast biconical form. The biconical faces are poorly defined and uneven in appearance, with a circular depression in the centre of each face that never truly formed a perforation. There is no decoration on either face.
