A complete cast lead spindle whorl of Unknown date. Diameter 33.2mm, thickness 8.1mm. Weight 40.33g.
The whorl is circular in plan and plano-convex in cross-section. The central circular perforation has a maximum diameter of 7.9mm. The surfaces are damaged by pitting resulting from corrosion and the edges are particularly damaged.
Helen Geake, Finds Adviser of the Portable Antiquities Scheme writes: “Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the Medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, “The M…

A complete cast lead probable spindle whorl of Unknown date. Length: 16.2mm; maximum diameter: 23.1mm. Weight: 40.90g.
The spindle whorl is bi-conical in form. It has flattened ends and a longitudinal tapering perforation through the centre. At one end the perforation is sub-circular and has a maximum diameter of 5.2mm. The perforation at the other end is much smaller with a diameter of 2.6mm. To one side of the larger perforation there is a flattened area which appears to be a deliberate attempt to make the opening smaller, perhaps in order to firmly secure the distaff. Each face i…

Irregular perforated weight or spindle-whorl made from chalk. Sub-rectangular with rounded corners when viewed either from the top or the side, it measures 27 x 34 mm and is 15 mm thick. It is either not particularly well made or has suffered some damage, as it has a rather lumpy outline. The circular perforation is a little off-centre and is symmetrically waisted, narrowing slightly to c. 10 mm minimum diameter. Weights like this one are usually interpreted as spindle-whorls, but a rectangular weight would perhaps not make a very good whorl as it would not turn evenly. They canno…

The item is a crude sub-conical shape with a sub-circular vertical hole in the centre. The surface is very poor and cracked, therefore it is difficult to determine whether there may have been a pattern on the surface. The base is relatively flat.
