Ground and polished bi-convex stone spindle whorl of probable prehistoric to later medieval date (3000 BC - 1700 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, its diameter measures 29.1mm and is 19.3mm thick. There is a regular circular pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The hole measures 11.1mm in diameter. The whorl weighs 20.45 grams. The whorl is undecorated and the edges are worn and slightly abraded. However the natural pattern or veins in the stone forms a series of vertical lines through the whorl which gives it a striped appearance. The whor…

A complete cast lead spindle whorl or weight of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan with a rounded top, base and sides and a narrow circular central perforation. The object is undecorated. The metal is a light brownish-white colour and is worn. The object is 22.1mm in diameter, 16.1mm thick and weighs 42.6g. A complete lead weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is plano-convex with a flat base and domed top. A central perforation runs through the object and all surfaces appear undecorated. The metal has a light white/grey patina and is worn. The object is 24.9mm diameter, 9.6mm thick and weighs 30.2g. The perforation is 7mm in diameter. Walton Rogers (1997, p.1731) suggests Roman spindle whorls have a diameter of between 4-8mm while the diameter of Early-Medieval to medieval spindles is in the range of 9-11mm to fit the thicker spindles of this period. Lead objec…

An incomplete circular cast lead object, probably a spindle whorl. The whorl is discoidal in form and rectangular (with rounded corners) in section with a flat base and top. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact measures 35.1mm in diameter with a large spindle hole with a diameter of 12.0mm. The object has suffered from a break which is evidenced by a fracture seam which runs diagonally up the side. Just less than one half of one of the faces has been lost, both in terms of thickness and surface area. What remains of the spindle whorl is very worn and distorted on both faces. The …

A lead object, possibly a spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan and domed in section, with a central circular perforation. The base is flat. It has a diameter of 26mm, a thickness of 12mm and the perforation has a diameter of 10mm. It weighs 57.25g. As the diameter of the perforation is greater than 5mm, it has been classified as a spindle whorl rather than a weight following Tyrell (2015).

Ceramic, conical object. It possesses a central perforation measuring 10mm in diameter and a flat bottom. Dr Kevin Leahy writes: it is most unlikely that this object was, as described, a 'Loom weight' and it was probably a spindle whorl. Dating is impossible on the surviving evidence.
