Ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date, probably Roman to Medieval .The spindle-whorl is near circular (with a diameter of 34.4mm) and of sub-rectangular section (with a thickness of 9.3mm) with some damage to the edge. There is slight curvature on both faces (one face is convex and the other concave), suggesting the spindle-whorl is made on a body sherd of a large vessel. The central aperture is circular with parallel straight sides (8.0mm). The pottery fabric is well fired and coarse with quartz inclusions. The pottery may be of Roman or medieval date. The whorl has a weight o…

Ceramic, conical object. It possesses a central perforation measuring 10mm in diameter and a flat bottom. Dr Kevin Leahy writes: it is most unlikely that this object was, as described, a 'Loom weight' and it was probably a spindle whorl. Dating is impossible on the surviving evidence.

A ceramic spindle whorl dating from the Roman to Medieva periods (43 - 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is flat and sub circular with a circular hole through the centre. The whorl has been formed from a fine white paste sherd. It measures 32mm in diameter. Spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the Post Medieval period which makes them difficult to date without contextual evidence. This spindle whorl appears to have been made from a piece of Roman pottery and so a slightly shorter date range has been suggested.

Pottery spindle whorl. Grey reduced fabric sandy fabric, probably made from a Roman Greyware base sherd. Flat-sided cylindrical discoid whorl with a central drilled aperture of diameter 8.1mm. The light material would make this object suitable for spinning a fine yarn, while the material and aperture size could commend either a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date. Chipped or nicked at one edge, and worn thereafter. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Roman to Early Medieval, 200-800 Diameter: 33.3mm, Thickness: 8.3mm, Weight: 11.45gms

An incomplete spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is missing part of one end due to old breaks but is otherwise intact. The whorl appears to be formed from fired grey/brown clay. It is circular in form, oval shaped in section with a large central circular aperture and very smooth, regular surfaces. It measures 21.62mm in length, 30.13mm in external diameter, 11.31mm in internal diameter, and 24.24g in weight. This is a ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is possible that it dates as early as the Anglo-Saxon period, although a later date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A ceramic discoidal spindle whorl, pierced through the centre from one side only. The fabric of the ceramic is red / pinkish in colour and has abundant inclusions of crushed flint and quartz. The fabric is reminiscent of some Bronze Age fabrics but this fabric is too well made, is well fired and dense. A Roman or possibly Medieval period may be more appropriate.
