Ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date, probably Roman to Medieval .The spindle-whorl is near circular (with a diameter of 34.4mm) and of sub-rectangular section (with a thickness of 9.3mm) with some damage to the edge. There is slight curvature on both faces (one face is convex and the other concave), suggesting the spindle-whorl is made on a body sherd of a large vessel. The central aperture is circular with parallel straight sides (8.0mm). The pottery fabric is well fired and coarse with quartz inclusions. The pottery may be of Roman or medieval date. The whorl has a weight o…

Stone spindle-whorl of uncertain date, Roman to early Post Medieval, c. 100 - 1700 The comparatively regular and circular spindle-whorl (of 34.9 - 35.8mm diameter and weighing 18.0g) is made from a coarse-grained, micaeous sandstone, now with polished surfaces. The spindle-whorl is of sub-rectangular section (7.9-8.4mm thick) with slightly flat faces. The perforation is central and is circular (5.0mm diameter) with straight parallel sides. There is little surviving evidence of decoration on the worn faces, although a single incised line bisecting one face is discernible and may be d…

An undecorated cast lead spindle whorl which is discoidal, with a rounded edge and almost flat faces. This lead whorl is roughly cast and is not quite circular being 30.03mm across its widest diameter and 25.99mm across its smaller diameter. The hole is slightly off centre and is 9.80mm diameter, one side of the weight is flat and the other side is slightly domed and is 8.7mm thick. The surface is rough with no sign of decoration. The dating of lead spindle whorls is problematic, as similar examples have been found in contexts that span the period from Roman to late medieval…

A small light grey spindle whorl measuring 17.26mm diameter x 10.99mm thick and weighing 14 grams. It is flat on one face and domed on the other and is not decorated. It has a central hole that tapers from 5.16mm to 4.52mm in diameter. Precise dating of lead spindle whorls of this type is not possible, unless from a secure context. Whorls first appear around the Iron Age but were used right through to Medieval and later periods, when they were at their most popular. This shape is known to have been used in the Early Medieval period (see page 25 of Walton Rodgers, 2007). Refer …

Small and crude lead weight or spindle whorl which appears to have the small central circular hole punched through rather than cast. The shape is irregular when laid flat, sub-square or sub-circular, with some edges curved and others nearly straight. It measures 16-17.5mm across. The top surface has a raised edge running around 75% of the diameter. The underside has a rim around the central hole as if it has been punched through from the opposite side. Cast Lead alloy Spindle Whorl of probable Early Medieval to Post Medieval date, perhaps AD 500 onwards. It is small in size measuring 18.77mm diameter with an aperture diameter of 7.9mm. Weight 17.3mm, thickness 8.3mm. The whorl is of Coppergate form A2 (Walton Rogers (2007), page 25), having two flat faces of unequal size. The side walls are flattened in places and are only angled very slightly. It has been difficult to find a comparable example but SWYOR-64F403 and NLM-E377E7 looks similar in shape but not size.

A cast lead alloy probable Spindle Whorl of Coppergate Type B1 possibly of the Iron Age or Roman period, dating from 800 BC - AD 410. Size: diameter 27.30mm, aperture 4.10mm, Weight 37.5mm and Thickness 7.51mm. The whorl is flat and discoidal. The side walls are flattened in places. The aperture is slightly 'off centre' and has a raised rim on one side. Walton Rogers (2007), page 25, notes that this shape of whorl originates in the Iron Age, though it's use continues through to the Post medieval period. However, there is some suggestion that a central aperture of 4-8mm is more common …

Small and crude lead weight or spindle whorl, flattish and sub-circular with the rounded central hole offset from the middle. The thickness varies across the whorl, and because it is very thin, it has been slightly twisted so one edge is raised from the surface when laid flat. There is also a small pinch of lead poking out from one edge where the weight has been damaged. Diameter 22mm, thickness 1-5-4.5mm, weight 8.4g. Similar examples can be found from the Roman to the post-medieval period.

A lead alloy weight or mis-cast whorl of unknown date. The object is conical in form with an irregular hole that has a diameter of 8.5mm. The surface is worn and distorted with heavy grooves in one area and deep pits in one area around the top, adjacent to the hole. The top of the cone has a diameter of 15mm and the bottom has a diameter of 23mm. It is difficult to assume a function as it may be a weight or a mis-cast spindle whorl.
