A possible spindle whorl made of shale or similar stone, possibly dating to the Roman or Early Medieval periods, circa AD 43-850. The object is approximately 50% complete. When complete it would have been circular in form with a central circular perforation. The outer surfaces are worn and uneven. Shale spindle whorl, circular in plan and ovate in profile and in section, with an off-set circular hole, 6 mm in diameter. Simple undecorated spindle whorls such as this one are more often excavated from sites dating from the Romano-British period in Cornwall, rather than from the Iron Age when they are often richly decorated. Quinnell (2004) illustrates a similar shale example from Trethurgy, St. Austell, on page 143, Fig.68, No.27, which is dated from the 3rd to the 4th century AD.

An almost complete Roman shale spindle whorl. The plano-convex spindle whorl has a circular perforation through the centre which has a diameter of 8.1mm. On one face, around the central perforation is a groove and the other face is incomplete. The surface of the spindle whorl is cracking all the way around. The external diameter is 36.7mm, the width is 21.7mm and the weight is 19.48g.
