A plano-convex, cast, lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1, probably dating from the Roman period, about AD 43 - 410. It has one flat face and one gently domed face. There is a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 5.3mm. It is undecorated and has a light cream patina. It is 26.11mm in diameter and 6.54mm thick. It weighs 18.82g.
For reference, see Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in Early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25. Walton Rogers suggests that whorls with a centre perforation of less than 6mm are likely to be Roman, and form A1 was used in the R…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast thin flat-sided discoid whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.4mm, Walton Rogers form B. A moulded design comprises a star of ten points formed by the overlaying of separate sub-rectangular shapes. Each point of the star contains a single small pellet and a further ring of small pellets is set centrally around the hole. The decoration appears on one side only. The affinities of the motif are with the decoration of usually biconical whorls ascribed to the early post-medieval period although the form enjoyed a long use. Patinated. Suggested date: P…

A cast lead spindle whorl dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, AD 1200 - 1550. It is of Waltn Rogers form C2, so biconical, though one face is steeper than the other. The more steeply angled face has a deep gouge across it - post depositional damage. It also has some curvilinear lines in relief. The shapes are unintelligable, but they do not appear to be letters. The shallower face is apparenetly plain.

Part of a lead alloy spindle whorl with an unusual design. It is a shallow biconical whorl, with a moulded border around the circumference and inner diameter. On one side is a knot design formed of intertwined lines. On the other side is a design made up of various symbols, including groups of three dots, radiating lines and what may be two intertwined letter F's, and, unusually, a heart motif. The image on the right hand side gives a better view of these symbols. Approximately 60% of the whorl survives. The diameter of the central hole is 10mm which would sugge…

A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B
Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

A lead possible spindle whorl which probably dates from the Iron Age date, about 800 BC - AD 50. If it is a spindle whorl, it is of Walton Rogers Form C1 which has no flat faces and curved sides. The central perforation is 8.4mm which is at the larger end of the range suggested by Walton Rogers for Iron Age spindle whorls (4-8mm). The height of the object is 18.9mm, the diameter 22.6mm, and the weight is 48.4g. It has a white patina. There is some damage to one end.
While it is possible that it is an Iron Age spindle whorl, the object could also…

Possible Medieval (12th to 15th centuries) miscast spindle whorl: A cast lead or lead alloy possible spindle whorl which is sub-circular in plan and in profile is a truncated conical. At the apex there is a circular indentation which should have been a perforation through the whorl. On the outer face there is decoration in the form of high-relief triangles forming a sun burst design. There is also a large irregular indentation on one side which may have been an air bubble in the casting process. Along the lower edge there is a integral perforation which may have been casting anoma…
