A small lead spindle whorl of probably dating from the Iron Age to Early Medieval period, about 100 BC - AD 1000. It is of Walton Roger's form A1, having one flat face and one convex face. The object has a diameter of 17.36mm, a thickness of 4.54mm. The diameter of the aperture is 5.44mm. It weighs 7.41g. The small aperture could perhaps indicate that a date in the Iron Age to Roman period is more likely than later.

Lead discoid spindle whorl of uncertain date, possibly Roman (c. AD 43 - 410). The object is flat and roughly circular in form, with a central circular perforation which is 5.1mm in diameter at one end and 7.16mm in diameter at the other. The object has a worn grey surface. It is 24.35mm in diameter, 5.71mm in thickness and weighs 16.27g. Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date precisely without archaeological context. The small central perforation of this one and the high incidence of Roman finds in the area where it was found may indicate a Roman date.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast whorl of plano-convex section with a slightly off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 7.7mm and faint traces of a moulded rim; a thin version of Walton Rogers form A1. Slight irregularities on the convex side might suggest this object to have been cast from one half of a biconvex whorl of early post-medieval type. Against this, the small spindle size would be apt to an Anglo-Saxon date; however, the fresh grey tint of the metal might well point to a more recent date. Ground and polished bi-convex stone spindle whorl of probable later prehistoric to later post medieval date (3000 BC - 1700 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, it measures 44mm length, 40.7mm width and is 12.8mm thick. There is a regular hour glass shaped pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The shape of this hole would suggest that it has been achieved by drilling from each side. It is likely that this would have been done with a bow drill and sand, which acts as the abrasive. The hole measures 8.2mm in diameter. The whorl weighs 32.38 grams.…

A bone spindle whorl. A domed spindle whorl with a central drilled hole (diameter 100 mm). The spindle whorl has been made from a femural or humeral head (the ball joint of an upper limb bone) from an animal. The dome shape is the natural shape of the bone. The base is flat. It is in complete condition, with a few small nicks here and there but not much sign of wear. The diameter of the spindle whorl is 37mm, and it weighs 12.19g. Bone spindle whorls are found on Roman, Early Medieval, and medieval sites, and therefore dating this particular item is difficult.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a flat circumferential rim and a tapered central aperture of diameter 8-10mm, possibly Walton Rogers form A1. Three nicks on the flat surface might be tying notches signalling the conversion of a whorl to a line weight. Patinated. The spindle hole might admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date, though the flat rim might equally relate this to the series of early post-medieval biconvex whorls, perhaps as a homemade copy cast using one half of such a whorl as a master. The mass would be apt to spinning a yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, Ea…

A complete lead possible spindle whorl of unknown exact date (c. AD 43-1800). The object is roughly circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section with a central moulded aperture of diameter 8.17mm. The object has a greyish-white patina. Out of context, such objects can be very difficult to date precisely.  The overall dimensions are as follows: 23.53mm in diameter, 6.39mm in thickness and 17.37g in weight.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast whorl of plano-convex section with a moulded central aperture of diameter 8.5mm, Walton Rogers form A1. Patinated. The spindle hole size might permit this to have been of Anglo-Scandinavian date though it is at the lower end of the range of wider holes; the mass would permit its use to spin a fine yarn. Accompanying material includes more Roman than Early Medieval artefacts, and the neat finish is at least compatible with an early date. Ridging around the hole on the broader side may point to casting in an open mould. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Med…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a moulded central aperture of diameter 8.5mm; Walton Rogers form A1, patinated and probably lightly laterally squashed. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date – it is at the upper limit of sizes apt to the Roman and Early Anglo-Saxon periods or the lower limit for a later spindle - while the mass would be apt to spinning a fine yarn; the condition and accompanying finds might as easily indicate an earlier date. A lead spindle whorl, dating from about AD 700 - 1550. It is flat and sub-circular in plan. It is of Walton Rogers form B2 having flat faces and curved sides. There is a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 6mm. Both faces are badly dented and have flattened areas, making it difficult to know if the whorl was originally decorated. Measurements are; diameter 30.3mm, thickness 13.2mm and weight 66.04. The size of the central hole suggests a date in the Middle Saxon period and form B2 whorls appear in York in the 700s but are more com…

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast biconical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 8mm and with a discernible circumferential medial rib; patinated overall. The hole has been distorted on one side, probably in antiquity. The spindle hole size may commend a Roman or Early Anglo-Saxon date. For the latter period, large beads of this and other forms are sometimes found at the waist of female burials, a position which might permit their interpretation either as a whorl on a spindle tucked into a girdle [the wooden spindle since decayed], or the fastening toggle for such a girdle…

A sub-conical lead object, probably a Roman or Early Medieval spindle whorl dating from AD 43 - 850. It is of Walton Rogers form A2, being conical. The base is oval, and it is possible this object is a plug for securing a fixing into stone instead. The object is 14.7mm in diameter at the base,  7.2mm thick and has a central hole of 5.7mm diameter.  It weighs 10.35g. Form A2 whorls are known from AD 700 to 1100, but whorls with a small central hole are more likely to be Roman.

A cast lead weight or spindle whorl of Roman to Medieval date. The object is sub-conical with tapering sides, truncated domed apex and a flat base.
