Lead spindle whorl. Cast, or rather mis-cast, spindle whorl of plano-convex section with a central moulded aperture of diameter 8.4mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1. An ancient scratch passes across the flat side on one side of the hole. Thinner and denser patina and encrustation have collected, the latter in more limited patches. Chipped. A small sub circular perforated lead object, probably a spindle whorl dating from the Early Medieval period, AD 500 - 850. The whorl is of Walton Rogers form A1, with one flat face and one convex face. It is not decorated. The object  is 19.3mm in diameter, 5.7mm thick and weighs 6.99g.  The central perforation is 8.2mm in diameter. Walton Rogers suggests that form A1 whorls date from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole makes an early to middle Saxon date more likely.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with rounded edges and a central moulded aperture of diameter 5.6mm, Walton Rogers form B. Patinated to a brown tint. The small spindle hole may suggest a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date for this object; a ‘bun-shaped’ form – though a term decried for its descriptive imprecision - is more likely to occur in an Anglo-Saxon context. The mass would be apt to spinning a yarn. Suggested date: Probably Early Medieval, 410-850 Diameter: 19.2mm, Thickness: 9.5mm, Weight: 21.48gms

Thickness: 4.8mm Weight: 21.51g Diameter: 29.73mm Form B2 whorls are common from AD 900, and the size of the central aperture also suggests a date after AD 850, but the decoration is more common on Medieval whorls. Standley (2016) suggests that decorated whorls date from AD 1200 - 1550.
