A complete lead spindle whorl of possibly early Medieval to Medieval date (AD 800-1100). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan and plano-convex in cross section. It fits into the Walton Rogers classification Form A1. The central hole is circular in shape with an internal diameter of 8.5mm. No decoration is present on both surfaces.  The whorl is cream/grey in colour, with an even surface patina. A complete lead-alloy spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date, c.AD 1200 - 1800. The spindle whorl is bi-conical with a central perforation running through it. One side is decorated raised lines diagonally radiating from the perforation to the outer edge forming triangular cells along the interior and exterior edges. All but two of the resulting cells have a single raised pellets within. Some damage is present on this side. The radiating lines are replicated on the other side of the whorl. Only the interior cells feature the single pellet within. The metal…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.5mm with a prominent flattened circumferential rim , patinated and abraded. While the spindle hole size and indeed the surface condition may point to an Anglo-Scandinavian or later date, the form might point to this being a homemade copy using one half of a biconical whorl to form a mould. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 850-1600 Diameter: 29.3mm, Thickness: 10.8mm, Weight: 41.20gms

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast discoid cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.8mm, cf. Walton Rogers form B. One side bears a possibly decorative scheme of indistinct shapes to either side of a gutter round the central hole. This might alternatively be the fortuitous result of shrinkage from casting in an open mould. The metal retains a grey tint which might argue against identification as a whorl, and perhaps in favour of a use as a much more recent fishing line weight. Suggested date: Unknown, Post-Medieval to Modern, 1500-1950 Diameter: 26.2mm, Thicknes…

Lead possible spindle whorl, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast lump with a central moulded hole of diameter 9.5mm [long axis], possibly approaching a conical form, cf. Walton Rogers form A2. Severely distorted with deep scratches and lateral squashing; patinated. If indeed a whorl, and perhaps mis-cast at that, the spindle hole size may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-1000 Height: 16.7mm, Diameter: 25.3mm, Weight: 34.57gms

Measurements are; diameter 18.0mm, thickness 4.9mm and weight 21.33g. The central hole is 6.1mm diameter. Form A1 whorls are dated by Walton Rogers to AD 500 - 1000. Those with a central perforation of 6-9mm are more likely to be early to mid Saxon, and those with a larger perforation are more likely to be late Saxon onwards.

A Medieval to Post Medieval lead spindle whorl dating from about AD 1200 - 1550. It is of Walton Rogers form C2. It is biconical with a deisgn in relief on each face. One face has a zigzag line forming a star of eight points round the central hole. The other face has at least four worn curvilinear symbols equally spaced round the whorl. Measurements are; diameter 22.7mm, thickness 6.4mm and weight 40.10g. The central hole is 7.1mm diameter. Walton Rogers dates form C2 whorls from 1100 onwards. Standley (2016) suggests that decorated lead whorls were used from AD 1200 - 1550.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast thin flat-sided discoid whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.4mm, Walton Rogers form B. A moulded design comprises a star of ten points formed by the overlaying of separate sub-rectangular shapes. Each point of the star contains a single small pellet and a further ring of small pellets is set centrally around the hole. The decoration appears on one side only. The affinities of the motif are with the decoration of usually biconical whorls ascribed to the early post-medieval period although the form enjoyed a long use. Patinated. Suggested date: P…

Part of a lead alloy spindle whorl with an unusual design. It is a shallow biconical whorl, with a moulded border around the circumference and inner diameter. On one side is a knot design formed of intertwined lines. On the other side is a design made up of various symbols, including groups of three dots, radiating lines and what may be two intertwined letter F's, and, unusually, a heart motif. The image on the right hand side gives a better view of these symbols. Approximately 60% of the whorl survives. The diameter of the central hole is 10mm which would sugge…

A complete lead spindle whorl from the Medieval period (AD1200-1500). The whorl is made up of a central bi-conical body with hole measuring 10.7mm. It is decorated on both faces with a series of raised lines, which form triangular shapes and pellets. The object has a grey patina, and the decoration is heavily worn. Lead spindle whorls were uncommon before the medieval period and the relatively large diameter of the central perforation places this in the mid to later medieval period. Standley (2016, 278-9) suggests this type dates between the 13th and end of the 15th cent…
