An incomplete lead alloy probable spindle whorl of unknown date. The whorl was probably originally plano convex but is now very worn with much of the edge missing. The central circular perforation has a maximum diameter of 6-7mm. Undecorated whorls are difficult to date, and the damage to this example makes it even harder. The whorl has a creamy white patina.

Ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date, probably Roman to Medieval .The spindle-whorl is near circular (with a diameter of 34.4mm) and of sub-rectangular section (with a thickness of 9.3mm) with some damage to the edge. There is slight curvature on both faces (one face is convex and the other concave), suggesting the spindle-whorl is made on a body sherd of a large vessel. The central aperture is circular with parallel straight sides (8.0mm). The pottery fabric is well fired and coarse with quartz inclusions. The pottery may be of Roman or medieval date. The whorl has a weight o…

The object measures 25.4 mm in diameter at the base and 13.2 mm long; the central hole is 10.2 mm in diameter. It weighs 15.9 grams. The lead alloy has a creamy light brown patina over much of its surface; however, it is damaged in various places and e…

Stone spindle-whorl of uncertain date, Roman to early Post Medieval, c. 100 - 1700 The comparatively regular and circular spindle-whorl (of 34.9 - 35.8mm diameter and weighing 18.0g) is made from a coarse-grained, micaeous sandstone, now with polished surfaces. The spindle-whorl is of sub-rectangular section (7.9-8.4mm thick) with slightly flat faces. The perforation is central and is circular (5.0mm diameter) with straight parallel sides. There is little surviving evidence of decoration on the worn faces, although a single incised line bisecting one face is discernible and may be d…

A cast lead spindle whorl or possibly weight. It has a slightly domed top and flat base with a tapering circular hole running through it, slightly off centre. It is 27.1mm in diameter, 7.5mm thick and weights 27.07g, the hole is 9.7mm in diameter at the base, 7.3mm at the top. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.

A lead alloy spindle whorl from Roman to Post-Medieval in date. The undecorated conical spindle whorl has a flat top and flat base. One side is shallower than the other and the edges are rounded. The whorl also has an off-centre sub-circular perforation which tapers from a diameter of 7.5mm to 8.5mm - wear to the inside edge of the perforation at the base produces a diameter of 10.3mm. There is no indentation on the wall of the perforation. The only other damage appears to be minor surface damage and a small gouge in the base of the whorl. The spindle whorl has a creamy light white pa…

Perforated lead disc, sub circular in plan, somewhat battered. Both faces are flat. The central hole is very regular and round (4.45mm diameter) and there is a slight raised lip around it on one face. The edges of the disc are quite rounded and battered. No decoration is visible. Substantial tan and white powdery patina throughout. Probably a spindle whorl or possibly a weight - found with numerous Roman finds.

An undecorated cast lead spindle whorl which is discoidal, with a rounded edge and almost flat faces. This lead whorl is roughly cast and is not quite circular being 30.03mm across its widest diameter and 25.99mm across its smaller diameter. The hole is slightly off centre and is 9.80mm diameter, one side of the weight is flat and the other side is slightly domed and is 8.7mm thick. The surface is rough with no sign of decoration. The dating of lead spindle whorls is problematic, as similar examples have been found in contexts that span the period from Roman to late medieval…

One face of the spindle whorl measures 28.6mm in diameter and has a thick collar around the edge; it is decorated with angled lines among six pellets, with a raised border around the internal perforation and around the outer edge. The opposite face measures 26.9mm in diameter and is thinner than its counterpart. It too is decorated with angled lines, which are difficult to see, and seven pellets. A small light grey spindle whorl measuring 17.26mm diameter x 10.99mm thick and weighing 14 grams. It is flat on one face and domed on the other and is not decorated. It has a central hole that tapers from 5.16mm to 4.52mm in diameter. Precise dating of lead spindle whorls of this type is not possible, unless from a secure context. Whorls first appear around the Iron Age but were used right through to Medieval and later periods, when they were at their most popular. This shape is known to have been used in the Early Medieval period (see page 25 of Walton Rodgers, 2007). Refer …

The whorl has a central perforation whose diameter tapers from 7mm to 5.7mm. The whorl has a speckled creamy light and dark brown patina. Spindle whorls and weights were cast throughout the Roman to the Post-Medieval period. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain a more precise date. A probable sub cylindrical spindle whorl or weight. The weight is sub circular in section (slightly flattened) with a large central hole with straight sides. The side of outer edges are also straight. It could also have been used as a form of weight; perhaps a net-sinker or line weight. It is flat on one side and a small groove demarcated by a creamy dark brown patina. The whorl also has a sub circular perforation which tapers from a diameter of 12.4mm to 10.5mm - wear to the inside edge of the perforation at the base produces a diameter of 12.7mm.
