A cast lead probable spindle whorl of uncertain date, probably early Medieval to medieval, AD 850 - 1200. The object may also be another form of weight or a net sinker. It is globular, of Walton Rogers form B2, having two flat faces (one almost fully occupied by the central hole) and curved sides, making it sub-spherical, tending towards drop shaped. Diameter of central perforation: 10.43mm. This suggests a date from AD 850 onwards, and form B2 whorls are known from York form that time, and at other sites into the 12th century.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast sub-circular perforated object, probably an Early Medieval lead spindle whorl dating from AD 700 - 850. It is if Walton Rogers form A2, being conical, but the whorl is irregular and may be a lead plug for securing a fixing into stone. The central hole is about 6.9mm diameter. The object is 17.0mm in diameter, 8.6mm thick and weighs 8.54g. For A2 whorls are known from AD 700 to 1100, but the size of the central hole makes a middle Saxon date more likely.

An Early Medieval lead spindle whorl dating from AD 500 - 850. It is of Walton Rogers form A1 having one flat face and one domed face. The object is 21.6mm in diameter, 7.4mm thick and weighs 17.46g. The central hole is 8.7mm in diameter. Form A1 whorls date from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole makes a middle Saxon date more likely.

Medieval lead spindle whorl, bi-convex with relief decoration on both faces. On one face the design is fairly regular, with eight radial ribs alternating with pellets. On the other there are two roughly concentric circles of not quite evenly spaced pellets, seven in the inner circle and ten in the outer. Similar to examples from Meols (Egan, G. in Griffiths et al. 2007, no. 2188 and nos. 2197-2200) and one from an early 16th-cent. context at the Augustinian Friary, Leicester, complete with its wooden spindle (Mellor and Pierce 1981, 139-40, fig.51 no.71). It is pos…

A lead probable spindle whorl, dating from about AD 1100 - 1550. It is flat and sub-circular in plan, damaged on one edge. It is of Walton Rogers form B1. There is a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 6.5mm. There is a raised rim round the hole on one face. The other face carries a pattern of rouletted chevrons forming a rough rectangle with some radiating lines. Measurements are; diameter 31.8mm, thickness 11.6mm and weight 76.68.
This whorl is unusually large and heavier than many examples. The rouletted decoration suggests a Medieva…

A lead spindle whorl, dating from about AD 700 - 1550. It is flat and sub-circular in plan. It is of Walton Rogers form B2 having flat faces and curved sides. There is a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 6mm. Both faces are badly dented and have flattened areas, making it difficult to know if the whorl was originally decorated. Measurements are; diameter 30.3mm, thickness 13.2mm and weight 66.04.
The size of the central hole suggests a date in the Middle Saxon period and form B2 whorls appear in York in the 700s but are more com…

It is decorated with a ring of moulded pellets on one face, and radiating ribs on the other. Measurements are; diameter 27.2mm, thickness 11.8mm and weight 32.16. It is of Walton Rogers form C2. Medieval lead spindle whorl, bi-convex with decoration in low relief on both faces. On one face the design is fairly regular, with eight radial ribs alternating with pellets. On the other eleven very poorly defined ribs are far less evenly spaced. An incomplete lead-alloy spindle whorl of probable Medieval to early Post-medieval date (c. AD 1066-1600).
The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan and features a central sub-circular perforation. It is convex, having one domed and one flat face.
There is possibly evidence of moulded decoration although this is unclear as the object is now fairly corroded. It has an uneven patina and is mostly brown in colour with some patches of metallic grey.

A cast lead spindle whorl of Medieval or Post-Medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1600. It is bi-conical, with a large, central perforation of internal diameter 9mm. It has a broad median ridge. There are traces of a possible moulded design of radiating lines on both faces. The whorl is 23.1mm in diameter and 10.3mm thick. It weighs 18.7g. It is of Walton Rogers form C2. Though C2 whorls are known from the iron Age onwards, the large central perforation and decoration suggests a date from AD 1100 onwards.

A complete Medieval to Post Medieval lead spindle whorl or weight, c.AD 1200-1700.
The object is circular with flat faces and a rounded edge. In the centre is a circular perforation measuring 7.1mm in diameter. The object is undecorated and has a powdery white / cream patina.
Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards. The mass for this weight does not fit clearly within any measuring system.

A complete lead or lead alloy biconvex spindle whorl, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1100 to AD 1500).
The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, with a central, circular perforation extending vertically through the object (internal diameter 9.1 mm). The sides of the spindle whorl are slightly convex and have a repeating pattern of vertical grooves and ridges. There are four lozenge-shaped mouldings attached to the corners of the object; there is a pronounced seam around the girth of the object and is suggestive that it was manufactured by casting. The seam indica…

Early-medieval or medieval lead spindle whorl. It is very nearly circular, flat on the underside and minimally convex on top. The edge is also minimally convex in profile and runs broadly at right angles to the faces. The central perforation is narrower at the top than the bottom. It is roughly circular internally but now quite deformed at the openings. The upper face is decorated with a five or six petalled flower motif in very low relief, centred on the perforation. It is very worn and now barely visible. Lead spindle whorls seem to have been in use from the 10th to 14th centuries.

Early-medieval or medieval lead spindle whorl. It is very nearly circular but flattened over a short distance on one side. It is broadly flat on the underside and around the central perforation on the upper face. Beyond this the upper face curves convexly and radially into the sides. The perforation is circular or very nearly so, and of more of less constant diameter. The upper face is decorated with an indistinct, sub-lozenge shape in relief, centred on the perforation. Lead spindle whorls seem to have been in use from the 10th to 14th centuries.
