A lead spindle whorl, probably of Early Medieval date, about AD 500 - 850. It is of Walton Rogers form A1, having one flat face and one convex face. It is sub-circular in plan. Both faces are mostly smooth, with a few pits on the domed face. This shape of spindle whorl is sugested by Walton Rogers to start in AD 500 can be found up to the 10th century, but the size of the central perforation is small, suggesting a Roman or Early Saxon date. The whorl has a creamy patina and is 31.4mm in diameter, 9.4mm thick and weighs 39.82g. The central aperture is 5.25mm in diameter.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast whorl of plno-convex section with a central moulded aperture of diameter 12.4mm-10.7mm, wider on top, Walton Rogers form A1. A groove or cut near the hole appears to have been inflicted in antiquity; patinated overall. The spindle hole size may point to an Anglo-Scandinavian date  while the mass may point to a primary function plying cord. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000 Diameter: 31.5mm, Thickness: 10mm, Weight: 51.37gms

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast discoid whorl with rounded edges and a central moulded aperture of diameter 6mm, possibly plano-convex, cf. Walton Rogers form A1; patinated overall. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast, or rather mis-cast, plano-convex whorl with a moulded off-centre tapered aperture of maximum diameter 8.9mm; patinated, cf. Walton Rogers form A1. The fabric on the lower convex part of the whorl is burred over the edge of the putative spindle hole, so it seems the casting was an abortive operation not followed by any use of the whorl with a spindle. The hole size might admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-1000 Diameter: 21mm. Thickness: 10.7mm, Weight: 14.11gms

Lead spindle whorl fragment. One half of a cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded and tapered aperture of diameter 7.5-6.4mm, of Walton Rogers form A1. Shrinkage lines around the hole on the upper flat side suggest the object was cast in an open mould. Patinated overall including across the broken surfaces, so broken in antiquity. The spindle hole size would admit a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date; material of the Roman period is present while early medieval finds are not. An incomplete, lead alloy weight, likely a spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (c. AD 43-1650). The object is sub-circular in plan and rectangular in cross section with a central aperture with a diameter of 6.67mm. The object has a pale cream patina. The obverse and reverse are both uneven, with irregular indentations and grooves. "The weight of the spindle whorl is suggestive of a thinner wool thread being spun, as there is a direct relationship between the weight of the whorl and the thickness of the resulting thread. Fine threads such as silk require a…

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable Early Medieval date, AD 500 - 850.  It has one flat face and one rounded face (Walton Rogers Form A1). The whorl is 22.9mm in diameter, 12.1mm thick and weighs 17.75g.  The central hole has a diameter of 5.2mm. The lead is crazed and flaky. Walton Rogers suggests that spindle whorls with small perforations are more likely to be either Iron Age or Romano British, but the A1 form does not appear to have been used in the Iron Age and Roman periods, so an Early Medieval date is suggested, probably the early to middle Saxo…
