Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconical whorl with central perforation of diameter10.8mm. A decorative scheme of paired radial lines appears on one surface, and of oval loops on the other. Of a common form, though perhaps a little better finished and heavier than usual, so perhaps intended for plying cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Diameter: 32.6mm, Height: 17.5mm, Weight: 55.80gms.

A complete cast copper alloy spindle whorl of medieval date. The spindle whorl is circular and plano-convex with fairly shallow angles. Both faces are decorated with raised radial V-shaped lines with pellets between them. A central circular hole runs through the object. Decorated spindle whorls are a common find but few come from dated contexts. They are however believed to be medieval in date. The metal is a light brownish-white colour and is slightly worn. The spindle whorl is 30.5mm in diameter and weighs 38g.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Flat plano-convex cast discoid whorl with an atypically small off-centre aperture of diameter 5.6mm; if an identification as a whorl is sustained, this may indicate a Roman date. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Diameter: 28.4mm, Thickness: 3.8mm, Weight: 16.96gms.

A lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval period. It is circular and plano-convex. Both faces are decorated with raised radial lines with groups of pellets between them. There is also raised median rib. The central hole is large and sub-circular, with a very large circular depression in the wall, probably to fix the spindle to the whorl. Decorated whorls are common finds yet few come from dated contexts, but they are believed to be medieval. This one has a well developed creamy grey patina.

Pottery spindle whorl, Roman- Medieval in date. The whorl has been formed from a piece of pottery cut from a vessek- probably when the vessel broke. It is circular in plan with a central circular perforation. It is flat on both sides with rounded edges. The fabric of the pottery is black on one side and brown/grey on the other. It is not clear if the black is the actual colour of the fabric or is due to wear/dirt. The fabric is smooth and has few inclusions. It appears to be a locally made pottery, and has not been especially highly fired. This sort of pottery is…

A lead spindle whorl of probable Early Medieval date, though it may run into the medieval period. The spindle whorl is bi-conical with a central perforation which is broken and it is missing a chunk. The object is decorated on both sides with linear designs, and these appear to be runic script. It is possible that the script is pseudo-runic, and merely intended to imitate a script, but it does seem that the runes are genuine Anglo-Saxon runes. Wear on the spindle whorl and the missing section hamper decipherment and the meaning of the runes has not yet been established. It is possible…

Cast lead or lead alloy bi-convex decorated spindle whorl of probable Medieval date (1300 - 1650 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan. Both faces have a cast rim around the edge and also a similar rim around the circumference of the inner hole. The central hole is broadly circular and has been cast / set slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 7.2mm. The design on the upper and lower is broadly the same consisting of a series of radiating diagonal lines forming irregular panels. On the upper face alternate ribs are decorated with single raised pellets. Th…

Broad period: UNKNOWN

A cast lead alloy probable spindle whorl of unknown date. It has an outer diameter of 28.7mm (with its central perforation having a diameter of 8.4mm) and is 8.8mm thick. It weighs 46.5gm. There is no obvious sign of decoration. The edges of the whorl are slightly rounded at the corners, but in section it is rectangular. Due to the lack of significant features it is difficult to date the whorl, however, plain examples similar to this are known from Roman and early Medieval contexts whereas decorated examples are generally believed to be Medieval. Compare also NARC-736167.
