A complete lead weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is conical with irregular sloping sides and a central perforation running through it. All surfaces appear undecorated and are worn. The metal is a light brownish-white colour. The object is 18.44mm in diameter, 8.67mm thick and weighs 12.31g. The perforation is 7.47mm in diameter. Lead spindle whorls and weights were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty without supporting archaeological context. The function of such objects is also dif…

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date, probably Iron Age to Post Medieval, about 200 BC - 1600, but maybe is most likely to be Medieval. The whorl is disc shaped; circular with straight sides and has a circular central aperture of 9.1mm diameter. One face is decorated with five raised moulded lines which cross each other to form a pentagon round the central hole. The other face is somewhat hollow and may have been decorated with radial raised lines, but these are now very faint. There is a gouge in the edge of this face, probably recent damage. The whorl is 27mm …

A lead Roman to medieval (AD c.43-c.1500) biconical spindle whorl. Overall, the object measures 26.6mm in diameter and 8.2mm thick. It weighs 23.55g. Both sides are decorated with an irregular pattern of raised dots and lines. The central perforation measures 9.5mm in diameter. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical or cylindrical in shape and are deco…

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650), most probably later medieval (AD1150-1600). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-convex. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 8.51mm in diameter. The perforation is irregular in shape possibly due to wear. One face of the whorl has a raised circumferential rib. There is also the remains of raised ribs and possibly pellets as seen on other examples, such as (HESH-4FCB15) discovered in Cheshire East. Although the decoration on this example is now very w…
