A cast lead alloy probable Spindle Whorl of Coppergate Type B1 possibly of the Iron Age or Roman period, dating from 800 BC - AD 410. Size: diameter 27.30mm, aperture 4.10mm, Weight 37.5mm and Thickness 7.51mm. The whorl is flat and discoidal. The side walls are flattened in places. The aperture is slightly 'off centre' and has a raised rim on one side. Walton Rogers (2007), page 25, notes that this shape of whorl originates in the Iron Age, though it's use continues through to the Post medieval period. However, there is some suggestion that a central aperture of 4-8mm is more common …

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl or weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and D shaped in cross section; it has been heavily eroded in the soil. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 9.1mm. Both faces are plain and undecorated. The spindle whorl has a mid grey coloured surface patina. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pot…

A lead alloy biconical spindle whorl of probable medieval date. There is traces of faint moulded decoration in the form of vertical ribs around both upper and lower hemispheres. The central hole is slightly sub-circular. Although spindle whorls are very hard to date withour contectual informaiton or more distinction decoration, it is likely that thsi example dates from the medieval period. However comparing this to other examples, it is taller, more narrow and more compact than the usual medieval-attributed examples recorded on this database.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast barrel-shaped weight with a central aperture of diameter c.8mm, lightly squashed, with a small nick on one side and patinated overall. A deep cut appears to be recent damage. The mass would admit use as a whorl to spin a fine yarn, and the aperture would possibly permit an early - Roman or Anglo-Saxon - date, though the barrel shaped spindle whorl was equally the dominant high medieval form. The object was reported along with several annular fishing line weights, and might have been pressed into service in that capacity as well, possibly then receivin…

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 43 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is sub-oval. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 7.32 mm in diameter on one face and is slightly narrower on the opposing face measuring 6.72 mm. This irregularity is possibly due to wear. This example is undecorated on both faces. The surface of the spindle whorl is cream in colour and abraded.
