A lead spindle whorl of Waltn Rogers form C, dating from AD 1200 - 1550. It is convex on both faces with straight edges, and is worn, but there are traces of relief decoration surviving. Standley (2016) suggests that decorated lead whorls date from the 13th to early 16th century. The whorl is 26.2mm in diameter, 10.4mm thick and weighs 38.63g.  The central perforation is 9.7mm in diameter.

Late Early Medieval to early Post Medieval cast biconical lead weight. Probably a spindle whorl, loom weight, or net weight. It is circular in plan. It is undecorated. Without further context, is it not possible to closely date this lead weight. Though the colour of the patina suggests a Post Medieval alloy, it could date to anytime between c1000 and c1750 AD. Diameter of 33mm, perforation diameter 12mm. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights."…

A complete but heavily abraded and corroded cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Medieval to Post Medieval date (1150 - 1650 AD), most probably Medieval (AD12300 -1600). The spindle whorl was originally broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. A central hole is present which has a diameter of approximately 11mm in diameter, Both faces of the whorl are decorated - although one face is poorly preserved. A cast lead spindle whorl dating from the late Medieval period or early Post Medieval period, about 1400-1600. It is bi-conical and of Walton Rogers form C2. The whorl is worn and abraded, but it is possible to discern moulded decoration on both faces. This is the same on each face, consisting of a series of transverse lines from the aperture to the outer edge, radiating like spokes. These form trapezoidal panels, and, despite the poor condition, in some of the panels a single raised dot can be seen. This is a common design motif. This example does not appear to have the raised borders…

Stone spindle whorl of uncertain date, Roman to early Post Medieval, c. 100 - 1700 The sub- circular spindle-whorl is made from coarse-grained sandstone and is of near rectangular section with slightly convex faces, with a thickness of 9.5mm. The whorl has a maximum diameter of 28.6mm and weighs 12.6g. The central perforation has a consistent profile and has a diameter of 6.5mm. It has been suggested that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier …

Lead alloy probably Medieval annular studded weight or more likely spindle whorl. Circular, (26mm diameter) 2.9mm thick flat disc with a 6.5mm circular hole in the centre. On one side are seven, perpendicular 4mm high projecting studs, approximately evenly spaced around the annulus. Grey to creamy white patination. A similar whorl with slightly more sophisticated decoration can be seen at SOM-A4BC67 on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. Circa AD1100-1500.

An incomplete cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1550. It was intended to be circular and biconvex (Walton Rogers form C2) but appears to be mis-cast, perhaps with the lead not filling the mould. It is decorated on one face with radiating ribs alternating with pellets and on the other with radiating ribs. The whorl has perhaps been rubbed against a very hot surface which has removed lead at one side, leaving a tail on the trailing edge. This was done in antiquity as the well developed overall patina is an even creamy white. The spur on …

The spindle whorl is sub circular in shape, and both faces are shallowly convex with a wide median band. Both faces are patterned with raised lines and pellets, but these are squashed, worn and damaged. Dimensions: diameter 29.7mm, height 10.6mm, hole diameter 8.8mm, weight 48.5g. An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical object with a slightly off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 7mm, and with two or three adjacent smoothed facets on part of its circumference. Patinated. The size of the hole would be apt to use with a Roman or Anglo-Saxon spindle as a whorl. However, objects which might have been used in this way occur in graves at the waist of female burials, and it is debated whether this might represent a spindle mounted on its whorl and tucked into the girdle, or a toggle though which the cord of a girdle might pass, which might be lightly decorated…
