A complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. The spindle whorl is plano-convex with a central perforation running through it. The object is undecorated. The metal is a mid greyish-brown colour and is worn. The spindle whorl is 22.5mm in diameter, 6.9mm thick and weighs 17.1g. Lead spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty. Decorated examples are thought to date to the medieval to post-medieval periods while undecorated examples cannot be securely dated without supporting contextual ev…

A cast lead or lead alloy probable spindle whorl. In plan it is sub-circular and in profile t is plano-convex, having two flat faces of unequal size. This would put it in Coppergate type A2, but it is a different shape to those illustrated in Walton Rogers (2007). There is a central sub-circular perforation which is 4.7mm diameter at one end; the other is more narrow due to slight squashing and measures 4mm. Iron Age and Roman spindle whorls tend to have central apertures in this size range, though this is not a sure method of dating. The surface of the spindle whorl is undecorated an…

A cast lead weight or spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is oval in form, D-shaped in section with central circular aperture. There is no decoration on any of the surfaces and the entire object measures 28.60mm in diameter, 8.44mm in thickness and 34.54g in weight. This is a simple cast lead weight, possibly for use as a spindle whorl. Its precise date range is uncertain and it may belong in any period from the Roman onwards, although a later Medieval to Post-Medieval date seems most plausible.

Likely to be a cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is slightly conical in form and sub-circular in plan. There is a significant circular hole at its centre. The base is smooth but the upper surface is pocked. The precise function is uncertain as it could conceivably be a weight or line sinker. Similarly, there is little diagnostic with which to date it meaning that it could date from the Roman period onwards. Similar, although cruder and undecorated, to SF-EFBE42. It measures 27.61mm in diameter, 7.75mm in thickness and weighs 24.72g.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with central moulded and slightly tapered aperture of diameter 12.4mm, surrounded by a prominent ridge probably created at the time of casting. The plano-convex form agrees with Walton Rogers' Form A1, possibly derived from that of cattle femur head whorls, while the large aperture would indicate date later than the Middle Saxon period. The extent of patination, which is patchy and modest on the curved surface and absent from the flat surface, must introduce significant doubt as to dating of this object, unless recent disturbance fr…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10.5mm, and with a flat rim circa 4mm wide where the two convex halves meet. Patinated overall. Though the identification is probably safe, dating remains uncertain. The characteristics of the whorl could admit dating between the Anglo-Scandinavian period and the Post-Medieval period, most likely at one or the other end of that span. At either period it would have served for plying cord rather than spinning a yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, 850-1600. Diameter: 31.2mm, Thickness: 11.7mm, Weight: 58.98gms.
