Three crudley cast lead alloy spindle whorls or lead weights of varying size. All three are plano-convex in cross section with an off-centre perforation from the top through to the base. Simple items like this have been used throughout the ages for a variety of tasks such as spindle whorls or fishing or goods weights. They have been used since the Roman period through to the modern periods. As these items are not from an archaeological context and are not decorated unfortunately they cannot be accurately dated and are given a broad AD 43-1500 date range.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or lead weight, possibly with a high tin content as the object has a silvery appearance. The whorl or weight is plano-convex in cross section with an off-centre sub-circular perforation from the top through to the base. The base has several small indentations around it but these do not appear to be decorative and are more likely the result of the manufacturing process. Simple items like this have been used throughout the ages for a variety of tasks such as spindle whorls or fishing or goods weights. They have been used since the Roman period through to…

A complete, age uncertain, cast, lead alloy, spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is roughly circular, plain, convex or a flattened, conical shape with relatively large roughly central spindle hole. The small size implies it's use on delicate fine materials such as silk. There is a white overall surface corrosion layer but no other damage. This is likely to date to the Post Medieval era. Ref. Detector Finds 6, Gordon Bailey, Greenlight Publishing 2008, page 71-88 no. C15.45 a & b and C15.112. The spindle whorl is 15.76mm long, 14.60mm wide, 5.07mm thick, 15.76 diameter and weighs 5.3g.

A lead spindle whorl of uncertain Roman or later date. It is conical in form with crudely flattened top and bottom surfaces, undecorated and with a central circular perforation. It measures 21.86mm in diameter, 7.80mm in height and weighs 15.73g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time and the current example may date to any point from the Roman period onwards.

A cast copper alloy disc-shaped object, possibly a spindle whorl. The object has a roughly circular hole in its centre while being roughly D-shaped in section. The object's surface is damaged being pitted on both surfaces, which would otherwise have been smooth. Hard to date out of context, the possible spindle whorl may date anywhere from the Iron Age through to the Medieval period; it is suggested that it is Roman or Early-medieval in date.

Small and crude lead weight or spindle whorl which appears to have the small central circular hole punched through rather than cast. The shape is irregular when laid flat, sub-square or sub-circular, with some edges curved and others nearly straight. It measures 16-17.5mm across. The top surface has a raised edge running around 75% of the diameter. The underside has a rim around the central hole as if it has been punched through from the opposite side. It is a tan or mid brown colour. Thickness 5.82mm, central hole 3.01mm in diameter, weight 10.0g. Similar examples can be found fro…

A perforated lead weight or spindle whorl. It is circular with a slightly irregular circumference measuring 25.3mm in diameter. It is plano-convex in shape and the the central perforation is approximately circular and 8.5mm in diameter. The spindle whorl is 5.15mm in height and weighs 16.87g. It is not possible to put a date on this object, but if this is a spindle whorl rather than a weight it could date to any time within the medieval period.
