Limestone spindle whorl. Plain fat limestone disc with large hole, Walton Rogers form B. The source record alludes to a large hole which may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. The flat cylindrical form is common at Flixborough in a 8th-to-9th-century assemblage, and continues as a popular form into the medieval period. The mass may suggest this example could be used to spin a fine yarn. Stone whorls are much more common than lead when occupation deposits are hand-excavated. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1100
Diameter: 34.5mm, Thickness: 12.5mm, Weight: 18.9gms.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete, undecorated, stone spindle whorl probably dating to the medieval period (c. AD 410-1500).
The spindle whorl is circular in plan. The object has a central circular perforation which has been drilled from each side. The object is made of a light rough stone possibly a micaceous sandstone. The object has been split in two, diagonally along one circular face, creating a triangular cross-section when viewed from one edge. As a result of the split one circular face of the spindle whorl is much lighter in colour that the other as it has exposed the inner material, su…

A stone annular object, probably a domed spindle whorl of Walton Rogers type A1 dating c 600-1200.
The object is domed and almost bi-conical with one flat side and one domed. A circular aperture has been drilled through the centre measuring 5.07mm on the domed side and widening to 6.04mm on the flat side. The walls of the aperture are cylindrical and the edges of the aperture on the lower edges appear worn and rounded. The surface is buff/pale brown.
Measurements: diameter: 14.55mm; thickness: 6.99mm and weight: 6.73g.

A stone spindle whorl or loom weight, probably of Iron Age to Roman date, (c. 300 BC - AD 400). The object is a cylindrical disc carefully formed from a fine-grained sandstone. It has a very neatly drilled central perforation, 4.5 mm diameter. Both faces are flat and smooth, without decoration. There is some chipping but the object is generally in good condition.
Spindle whorls are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery) as the general form was in use for a long period. However this spindle whorl closely resembles, in material and form, oth…

A stone spindle whorl.
The find is disc shaped with a central circular perforation.
There is decoration present at least on one face, in the form of incised circular and diagonal patterns. The decoration is worn and only partially visible.
Roman finds have been found in the vicinity which may suggest a Roman date.

A complete stone or ceramic spindle whorl, weight, or gaming piece of uncertain date, possibly Roman to Medieval. The object is circular in plan and convex in profile with a diameter of 25.9mm, height of 18mm and weighs 13.99g. The circular central perforation penetrates the object thickest part of the object (18mm) with an internal diameter of 6.7mm. The object is finely made and evenly polished with a smooth even surface. The surface is undecorated and lacks diagnostic features, so it is not possible to securely ascribe a date. A small pebble is wedged inside one side of the perfora…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Unidentified stone object of unknown date, but is probably a spindle whorl. The object has been made from a piece of very fine grained stone (possible siltstone or mudstone) and has been carefully shaped and into a sub-circular shape. At the centre is a circular perforation with an internal diameter of 5.2mm. The outer edges of the object have been deliberately smoothed. It is possible that this may have been used as a spindle whorl.
Length: 34.4mm; width: 30.7mm; thickness: 7.3mm; weight: 11.19g.

A stone spindle whorl of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (400 BC - AD 300). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and rectangular in profile. It has been carefully chipped and ground from what seems to be a coarse micaceous sandstone. Through the middle of the whorl is a circular shaped hole set slightly off centre; the hole has straight sides and it has an approximate diameter of 7.5mm. The whorl is undecorated and is relatively unabraded with crisp fresh edges. The whorl is a grey brown colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to…

Stone spindle whorl of uncertain date, Roman to early Post Medieval, c. 100 - 1700
The sub- circular spindle-whorl is made from coarse-grained sandstone and is of near rectangular section with slightly convex faces, with a thickness of 9.5mm. The whorl has a maximum diameter of 28.6mm and weighs 12.6g. The central perforation has a consistent profile and has a diameter of 6.5mm.
It has been suggested that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier …

Mid grey, sandstone spindle whorl, round in plan and flat in profile, with a small perforation in the centre measuring 5.3 mm in diameter. The surface has a number of small, circular marks on both sides. Spindle holes became progressively wider from the Roman period to the 10th century (Walton Rogers, 2007, CBA Research Report). Iron Age and Romano British whorls tend to have holes of 4-8mm in diameter. Therefore this whorl could possibly date from the Romano-British to Medieval period - is difficult to confirm without supporting evidence. A similar object can be seen un…

Decorated spindle-whorl made from chalk, probably of middle or late early-medieval date. The base is approximately circular and 31mm in diameter; it is decorated with a crudely made groove around the central perforation. The angle between base and sides is rounded, and the steeply sloping sides are also slightly convex. They are decorated with a series of irregular grooves, mainly roughly vertical but also some more oblique and some slightly curved. These grooves do not quite reach the base. Where the top survives, they do not seem to reach this either, but most of the top is now miss…

The smooth upper surface is decorated with one sub-circular incised ring around the central perforation, although this is a little crude. The underside is undecorated and is smooth in appearance but has a slight grove across the middle of the whorl. The surface takes a brown colour.

Roman to Medieval stone weight, probably a spindle-whorl or loom weight. It is rather heavy for a spindle whorl unless it was used to produce a very strong thread or cord. The stone it is made from is a fine grained micaeous sandstone. The artefact is of sub-rectangular section with flat faces, with incised decoration on both faces and around side wall. The side wall is decorated with a continuous incised line around its centre. Both main faces are decorated with a series of nine incised lines radiating out from the central perforation and terminating at an incised border parallel wit…
