Middle Saxon/Late Saxon stone spindle whorl, fine-grained pale-grey limestone plano-convex with central perforation within three engraved concentric grooves on the upper surface and two on the base. Diameter 35mm, weight 26.01g. Cf. Late Saxon example from Thetford (Rogerson and Dallas 1984, fig.148, no.4) and broadly similar but more deeply grooved Middle Saxon example from grave 28 at Harford Farm (Penn 2000, 29 and fig.94, no.4 and plate VI).

A probable spindle whorl made of rusty sandstone. It is discoid, one face is complete, the reverse is damaged and has its original surface missing. It weighs 16g, measures 34.05mm diameter and is 10.63m thick. In the centre there is a 6.86mm diameter hole which has a slight hour-glass shaped profile. This profile may be due to wear. Crummy (1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust p. 67) defines a spindle whorl as having a central perforation which has a minimum 5mm diameter, the diameter a…

An Early-Medieval/ Medieval (500-1500) Spindle whorl of Coppergate type A1 (Walton Rogers, 2007), with one flat and one domed face. It measures 34.95mm in diameter, stands 18.09mm tall and weighs 30.4g. The circular central perforation measures 8.71mm diameter at the domed face and 10.07mm diameter on the flat face. The material is probably stone, but also looks very like earthenware. It has hairline cracks (possibly decorative?) on the domed face, consisting of a concentric ring and five roughly-equidistant radiating lines on the sides.

A stone sub-circular spindle whorl (a weight used on a spindle for spinning fibres in textile manufacture) constructed from a smooth dark grey stone. The spindle whorl is not perfectly circular and the central drilled hole is not in the very centre. The spindle whorl measures 33.54 mm in diameter and 15.32 mm thick. Its central hole is 10.1 mm in diameter. It weighs 27.4 grams. Dating spindle whorls is notoriously difficult in the absence of other chronological indicators. This example may date from as early as the Roman period (perhaps even earlier), although it is possibly later.

Stone spindle-whorl of uncertain date, Roman to early Post Medieval, c. 100 - 1700 The comparatively regular and circular spindle-whorl (of 34.9 - 35.8mm diameter and weighing 18.0g) is made from a coarse-grained, micaeous sandstone, now with polished surfaces. The spindle-whorl is of sub-rectangular section (7.9-8.4mm thick) with slightly flat faces. The perforation is central and is circular (5.0mm diameter) with straight parallel sides. There is little surviving evidence of decoration on the worn faces, although a single incised line bisecting one face is discernible and may be d…

A spindle whorl, or, due to its lightness in weight, possibly a bead. Unfortunately, it is not possible to date the item, as it was not found in an archaeological context. The item was found in a stream. A similar example, which is slightly smaller in size, was recovered from the same area. Please see related finds section for information.

This discoidal stone spindle whorl probably dates from the Iron Age and is typical of examples found at the Llangynog defended enclosure in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The disc is well formed and smoothed; it has two pairs of incised parallel lines forming a cross on one face. In each case, the lines tend to converge. One quadrant has an additional radial line. The lines seem to be too coincident to have been accidental and similarly marked stone whorls have been found in context at Meare Lake Village (Somerset). In one case, the resemblance is remarkably similar - see http://www.g…
