Stone spindle-whorl of uncertain date, Roman to early Post Medieval, c. 100 - 1700 The comparatively regular and circular spindle-whorl (of 34.9 - 35.8mm diameter and weighing 18.0g) is made from a coarse-grained, micaeous sandstone, now with polished surfaces. The spindle-whorl is of sub-rectangular section (7.9-8.4mm thick) with slightly flat faces. The perforation is central and is circular (5.0mm diameter) with straight parallel sides. There is little surviving evidence of decoration on the worn faces, although a single incised line bisecting one face is discernible and may be d…

A spindle whorl, or, due to its lightness in weight, possibly a bead. Unfortunately, it is not possible to date the item, as it was not found in an archaeological context. The item was found in a stream. A similar example, which is slightly smaller in size, was recovered from the same area. Please see related finds section for information.

Irregular perforated weight or spindle-whorl made from chalk. Sub-rectangular with rounded corners when viewed either from the top or the side, it measures 27 x 34 mm and is 15 mm thick. It is either not particularly well made or has suffered some damage, as it has a rather lumpy outline. The circular perforation is a little off-centre and is symmetrically waisted, narrowing slightly to c. 10 mm minimum diameter. Weights like this one are usually interpreted as spindle-whorls, but a rectangular weight would perhaps not make a very good whorl as it would not turn evenly. They canno…

Ground and polished bi-convex stone spindle whorl of probable prehistoric to later medieval date (3000 BC - 1700 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, its diameter measures 29.1mm and is 19.3mm thick. There is a regular circular pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The hole measures 11.1mm in diameter. The whorl weighs 20.45 grams. The whorl is undecorated and the edges are worn and slightly abraded. However the natural pattern or veins in the stone forms a series of vertical lines through the whorl which gives it a striped appearance. The whor…

A chalk spindle whorl of unknown date. The spindle whorl is slightly irregular, but is circular in plan, with a diameter of between 58.72 and 60.68mm and plano-convex in profile with a maximum thickness of 21.27mm. In the centre there is a round perforation which has been drilled from both sides. It is between 6.5 and 15.5mm in diameter. On some parts of the surface working marks are visible and around the central perforation on the flat side there is an oval incised line, about 1mm in width. Weight: 77.55g

A complete stone spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is made of a soft, light calsitic stone which has been worked to be circular in plan with rounded sides and edges. A sub-circular central perforation is present and the whorl is undecorated. The whorl is 44.2mm in diameter, 14mm thick and weighs 31.4g. Spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty. Geoff Egan suggests that the cheaper, possibly home-made, ceramic and bone spindle whorls were displaced by purposefully manufactured stone …

An incomplete stone flat or discoidal spindle whorl, of Neolithic to Medieval dating (BC 3500 - AD 1900). Around 75% of the spindle whorl is present. Both faces of the spindle whorl are flat and undecorated; a circular perforation runs through the the centre, presumably for attachment to a wooden spindle (now missing). The spindle whorl is made from a fine-grained sandstone. The whorl is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile, with parallel faces. The central hole is sub circular in shape and has been drilled slightly off central, from both sides. The internal diameter of the…

A stone probably Roman to post-medieval spindle whorl (AD c.43-c.1700). The whorl is broadly circular and has an elongated hexagonal cross-section (rectangular with bevelled edges). At the centre is a drilled circular perforation with bevelled edges. Overall, the whorl measures 40.1mm in diameter and 11.5mm thick. It weighs 29.55g. The central perforation measures 5.2mm in diameter.

A stone spindle whorl probably dating to the later prehistoric to later post medieval date (3000 BC - AD 1700) made of a course sandstone. It is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The object has a regular hour glass shaped pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The shape of this hole would suggest that it has been achieved by drilling from each side. The object has an even mid-brown patina. Egan (1998) states that spindle whorls were used from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period and that the cheaper, possibly home-made ceramic…

A stone spindle whorl of unknown date. The spindle whorl is circular in plan; in profile it is rectangular with rounded edges. Both faces of the spindle whorl are flat and undecorated; a circular perforation runs through the the centre, presumably for attachment to a wooden spindle (now missing). Spindles were used to twist fabric fibres together to produce yarn. The whorls attached to the spindle acted as a weight to help to provide momentum whilst spinning and twisting the fibres together. This method of preparing yarn has been in use since prehistoric times and throughout the ages …
