An incomplete stone flat or discoidal spindle whorl, of Roman to Post Medieval dating (AD 43 - AD 1650). Around 50% of the spindle whorl is present. The spindle whorl is semi-circular, and rectangular in cross section. The central hole is sub circular in shape and has been drilled slightly off central, from both sides. The internal diameter of the hole measures 5.6 mm wide. Both the upper and lower faces are flat. No traces of decoration are present on either the upper or lower faces. The whorl has a diameter of 55.1 mm, with a width of 29.8 mm and is 14.1 mm thick. It weighs 36.6 g (…

A stone sub-circular spindle whorl (a weight used on a spindle for spinning fibres in textile manufacture) constructed from a smooth dark grey stone. The spindle whorl is not perfectly circular and the central drilled hole is not in the very centre. The spindle whorl measures 33.54 mm in diameter and 15.32 mm thick. Its central hole is 10.1 mm in diameter. It weighs 27.4 grams. Dating spindle whorls is notoriously difficult in the absence of other chronological indicators. This example may date from as early as the Roman period (perhaps even earlier), although it is possibly later.

A spindle whorl made of a rusty coloured fine grained sandstone. It is discoid in shape, with one face damaged resulting in the loss of the original surface on that side. It weighs 52.1 grams, with a diameter of 42.76mm. The central perforation is 9.93mm wide. It is 23.00mm thick. Crummy (1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust p. 67) defines a spindle whorl as having a central perforation which has a minimum 5mm diameter, the diameter and thickness is even, the sides are smooth, and…

A probable spindle whorl made of rusty sandstone. It is discoid, one face is complete, the reverse is damaged and has its original surface missing. It weighs 16g, measures 34.05mm diameter and is 10.63m thick. In the centre there is a 6.86mm diameter hole which has a slight hour-glass shaped profile. This profile may be due to wear. Crummy (1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust p. 67) defines a spindle whorl as having a central perforation which has a minimum 5mm diameter, the diameter a…

A possible spindle whorl made of fine grained Jurassic blue or white lias limestone, (identified by Jon Radley, Keeper of Geology, Warwickshire Museum). Only half of the object remains. It is plano-convex, weighing 37g, measuring 50.14mm diameter and is 20.4m thick. In the centre there is an 11mm diameter hole. This may be a spindle whorl, but appears to be exceptionally heavy when compared to stone spindle whorls from London (Egan G. 1998 The Medieval Household Daily Living c. 1150-c.1450 Museum of London, London, The Stationary Office, Nos. 790-802), but it appears to be not heav…

A probable spindle whorl made of a middle Jurassic rusty sandstone, (identified by Jon Radley, Keeper of Geology, Warwickshire Museum). It is discoid, weighing 43.41g, measuring 47.39mm diameter and is 15.56m thick. In the centre there is a 8.99mm diameter hole. There are no signs of wear around the edges of the hole. The dates of spindle whorls are not certain, but were used throughout the Roman and Medieval periods (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide Unpublished). Egan (Egan G. 1998 The Medieval Household Daily Living c. 1150-c.1450 Museum of London, London, The Stationary Offi…
