Lead spindle whorl, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast biconical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm. Moulded decoration on one side comprises thirteen or fourteen rays, some converging with their neighbours to form the points of an irregular and incomplete star, and with [usually] a single pellet in each of the compartments so defined. The other side appears to bear fewer lines and pellets in pairs. A moulded circumferential rib marks the meeting of the two halves. Crushed on one side with consequent local distortion. Patinated. A complete lead spindle whorl of medieval to post medieval date (c. AD 1150 - 1600). The whorl is sub-circular, plano-convex and the reverse has a slight rim around the circumference. There is an irregular central hole of 8 mm in diameter and four smaller holes of 4 mm and 2 mm in diameter equally spaced around it. Diameter 30 mm, thickness 9 mm and weight 34.19 g.
