A complete cast lead probable spindle whorl of uncertain date, possibly Roman or early Medieval date c.AD 500 - c.1000. Description: The undecorated spindle whorl is sub-conical (domed) in form. It has a central vertical hole which has a diameter of about 5.63mm. This spindle whorl is mid grey in colour and the surface is very badly cracked overall with areas of exfoliation. Measurements: 21.71mm diameter, 9.96mm height and 15.74g in weight. Discussion: Undecorated spindle whorls are notoriously difficult to date. Work at Flixborough has suggested that (at least there a…

An early Medieval (AD 500-1000) lead spindle whorl. It is a cast plano-convex D- shaped whorl with a central moulded aperture, diameter 10.71mm, the aperture is 11.28mm where it emergeges on the flattened face. The D shape and internal diameter of 11.28mm, may make this whorl late Saxon Diameter at flattened face: 25.05mm, thickness: 8.71mm, weight: 20.47g. Penelope Walton Rogers, has classified spindle whorls from Early-Medieval Flixborough, this example almost fits her class A1, dating to the late Saxon period AD 500 - 1000. However there has not been a wide scale study of the…
