Cast lead alloy circular spindle whorl or weight. It is circular with a highly domed, almost semi-circular, top and flat base. There is a circular hole running through the middle and possible traces of raised decoration on the top. Due to the simpilicity of the shape it is hard to date it precisely and it could be Roman - Post Medieval. It is 24.8mm in diameter, 11.7mm thick and 36.39 grams in weight; the central hole is a maximum of 8.1mm.

A lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl is plano-convex and has a central circular hole which appears to have straight sides. Both faces are decorated with raised radial and zig-zag lines. It has a diameter of 27.67mm and is 9.18mm thick. It weighs 26.45g. The whorl is grey coloured and does not appear to have a patina. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical and are decorated on both faces with raised dots and radiating or zig-zag ribs. They have been found in ploughsoil over the site of Roman b…

A lead-alloy spindle whorl, decorated on both sides. The whorl is plano-convex with a circular central hole, but is damaged on both faces. The decoration on one side is raised radial ribs dividing the whorl into eight sections, with a large raised pellet in alternate spaces. On the other side, the raised ribs form a square with a St. Andrew’s cross inside it, running from corner to corner of the square. There is also a central raised rib sub dividing two opposing triangles formed by the square and the cross, and central pellets in the other two triangles. It is 32.3mm in diameter and…

A complete cast lead alloy Medieval spindle whorl. It is biconical in shape, with a circular perforation in the centre. The spindle whorl is quite worn, but on one face there are the faint remains of a raised, chevron pattern from the centre to about 3mm above. The whorl is grey in color and lacks a patina, probably due to it being an alloy. It is 30mm in diameter, and 13mm high. The perforation is 10mm in diameter. It weighs 46.2 g.
