A cast lead alloy Medieval spindle whorl (diameter: 29.26mm). It is plano convex with a central circular perforation (internal diameter: 9.55mm). On face is decorated with raised dots and radiating lines. The other face is decorated with lines which split it into four sections; within each section there is a raised dot enclosed in a circle. It is generally accepted that whorls decorated in this style date from the medieval period, about 1200 - 1600 AD. The whorl has a dark brown patina but this may be de to having ben coated with oil.

A mis-cast lead alloy spindle whorl which is interesting as it is evidence of manufacture. The whorl is irregularly shaped and only half the thickness of a normal whorl. The mould must have slipped during casting as the central perforation is full of lead alloy, and there is a large flange projecting from one side. Opposite the flange, there is not enough metal and the edge of the whorl is missing. The face of the whorl is decorated with moulded raised radiating ribs. The reverse is rough and irregular, suggesting that the other half of the mould was not in place. There is also an imp…

An incomplete lead alloy probable spindle whorl of unknown date. The whorl was probably originally plano convex but is now very worn with much of the edge missing. The central circular perforation has a maximum diameter of 6-7mm. Undecorated whorls are difficult to date, and the damage to this example makes it even harder. The whorl has a creamy white patina.

A lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval period. The whorl is plano convex with a thickened median rib. One face is decorated with raised dots and lines. The other is more worn, but appears not to be decorated. The central perforation has a maximum diameter of 11mm and has straight sides. There is a depression in the middle of the side wall of the perforation, probably indicating where the whorl was attached to the spindle. There is a gouge across one face of the whorl. A lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval period. It is plano-convex with a thickened median ridge. Both faces are decorated with raised dots and / or lines. The central hole has a sub-circular cavity in the side wall. This is a common type of spindle whorl; compare for example SWYOR-BDC721 or SWYOR-82AF76. Few have been found in dated contexts, but a medieval date of 1300 - 1500 is usually suggested. The whorl has a white patina.

A lead alloy Spindle Whorl of uncertain date, but possibly Early Medieval. Cast cylindrical or drum-shaped whorl, probably of Walton Rogers' Class A2, with a central aperture tapering from diameter 9.3mm to 10.3mm. This shape of whorl was used most commonly in the Early Medieval period, about 800 - 1100. The upper face has rounded shoulders and a groove round the central hole. There is no visible recess in the side wall of the central hole. The bottom face is hollowed. Compare NLM-5C7BA7.

A lead alloy spindle whorl of a shape used mainly in the Iron Age and Early Medieval period but known from all periods, so of uncertain date. The whorl has two flat faces of equal size and rounded edges. The central hole is 10.05mm in diameter, larger than many Iron Age spindle whorls, so a Roman to Post Medieval date is suggested. There is a slightly raised rim round the centre perforation on one face. There is no fastening hole in the side wall of the perforation. The whorl is grey in colour and has little patination.
