A lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval period, about AD 1100 - 1600. It is bi-convex with a large central circular aperture measuring 8.8mm. Both faces are decorated with a pattern of raised symbols or letter forms, not all of which are legible. The letters are mainly Roman and separated by pellets. On one face are: "+ T E [retrograde] • (6 •) [--] • (A) •" and on the other face: (A) • F [retrograde and inverted] • K [retrograde] • I • (M) • d [lombardic]".
The whorl has a cream patina. It is 29.9mm diameter, 10.1mm thick and 42.55g. Spindle …

A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl, probably of Medieval or Post Medieval date and dating from AD 1200 - 1600. The spindle whorl is circular in plan, slightly biconvex in section and has a thickened median band. The object is perforated centrally with a hole with a diameter of 10.0mm. One face of the whorl is smooth and undecorated but has one linear indentation which could have been formed during casting. The other face is quite plain but has a number of raised lines which could be the worn remains of some relief decoration, possibly consisting of lines radiating out from the c…

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date, AD 1200 - 1600. The whorl is plano-convex with a thick median band which also forms a slight collar round each face. There is little visible decoration, but one surviving raised pellet suggests that there may have originally been more before wear smoothed them. There is a small, oval indentation on the inner wall of the central perforation. This looks deeper and to have steeper sides than the usual hollow caused by contraction of the metal as the casting cools. It may be an air bubble. The whorl is 22.6mm in diameter and 10.9mm thic…

A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the Medieval to early Post-Medieval periods (about 1200-1600). The whorl is plano convex with a somewhat pinched median rib. Both faces are decorated only with raised pellets; there is a thin but prominent border around the outside; portions of the perforation edges have been bent inward. The central perforation has a maximum diameter of about 9mm. The whorl has been damaged on the median rib and there is an open hole leading from the edge to the inside wall of the central perforation. The whorl has a creamy blue-grey p…

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date but probably Medieval. It is discoidal with slightly rounded sides. There is a bulge of metal round the edge on one face. There is a central hole which is placed slightly off centre and has a diameter of 11.4mm. There is no cavity in the wall of the central perforation. The whorl has light surface wear but with only a few deep gouges. It has a creamy brown and white patina. Spindle whorls and weights were cast throughout the Roman period to the Post-Medieval period and are hard to date precisely. For a similar whorl, please see PAS rec…

A lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval period. It is plano-convex with a thickened median ridge. Both faces are decorated with raised dots and lines. The central hole has a sub-circular cavity in the side wall. This is a common type of spindle whorl, compare for example SWYOR-BDC721. Few have been found in dated contexts, but a medieval date of 1300 - 1500 is usually suggested. The whorl has a white patina.

A lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval period. It is plano-convex with a thickened median ridge. Both faces are decorated with raised dots and lines. The unusually large central hole tapers and there is a sub-circular cavity in the side wall. This is a common type of spindle whorl, compare for example SWYOR-BDC721. Few have been found in dated contexts, but a medieval date of 1300 - 1500 is usually suggested. The whorl has a white patina.
