A lead alloy probable spindle whorl possibly dating from the Iron Age, about 400 BC - AD 43. The whorl is sub-spherical with a flattened face top and bottom. This would fit into type B2 in the Coppergate classification system, a type that was mainly used in the Iron Age, but continuing into the 7th century. The central aperture is circular and has a diameter of about 6mm. This makes it more likely that the whorl is Iron Age in date (Walton Rogers, 2007, page 23 - 25). A complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, but probably Iron Age or Roman. It is flat and disc shaped with a hole in the centre. The whorl has two flat faces, and the sides are straight. This makes it a Coppergate type B1 (Rogers, 2007, page 25). One face has radial lines incised into it. Although type B1 continues in use through the 5th. 6th and 7th centuries, ornamentation on Anglo-Saxon whorls is rare (ibid).
