A cast lead domed weight, probably an early medieval spindle whorl of Walton Rogers type A1 dating c. 700-1100. Description: The object is domed (beehive shaped) with a central circular aperture measuring 7.7mm at the top then tapering to 9.2mm where it emerges on the flat side. The flat side has a raised rim around the outer edge and partially around the central circular perforation creating a concave annular surface which has a couple of sub-circular indentations. The weight is patinated an off-white. Measurements: 34.54mm in diameter (at widest p…

A complete lead conical spindle whorl probably dating to the Medieval period c. AD 1100-1500. The object is circular in plan with a circular perforation and eight broadly equidistant circumferential lobes; two of which are fused together. Measurements: diameter: 27mm; thickness: 12mm and weight: 31.7g. Lead spindle whorls can date from the Roman period to the Post Medieval Period and are hard to date precisely. However, the wide central perforation indicates a post-saxon date. A cast lead lobed whorl is illustrated in Read (2021: 272, no: 1554) and dated c. AD 1100-150…

A lead alloy, circular, plano-convex, perforated weight, possibly a spindle whorl dating c. 900-1700. The weight is undecorated. The hole at the upper (convex side) of the object is sub-oval but within an almost cruciform shaped slot (10mm x 7.3mm). The perforation widens towards the base. The basal hole on the reverse is sub-oval (12.4mm x 9.8mm). The object is a white grey colour. Measurements: diameter: 29.32mm; thickness: 7.89mm and weight; 26.58g. The spindle whorl is conical with a flat base and sub-circular in plan, with a slightly off-centre circular perforation. It is undecorated on both faces. The use of spindle whorls spans the Iron Age to early Post-Medieval period, but lead examples with larger perforations such as this they are more typically Early Medieval to Post Medieval. Measurements: diameter 25.16mm, diameter of perforation 9.44mm, thickness 7.30mm, weight 19.12g. Similar types are SUSS-644BC2 …

A complete, fully perforated, cast, lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the Early Medieval to Post-Medieval periods c.AD 800-1850. It is circular in plan and has a domed profile with a flat bottom and convex top. Measurements: 30.47mm diameter at the base, 9.11mm diameter at top of perforation hole. It is 12.13mm thick and weighs 47.39 grams. Discussion: Lead is the commonest material for spindle whorls on the PAS database. Few of these are found in excavated contexts, perhaps because they were far easier to recycle than whorls of bone, stone or pottery. The ce…

A cast lead alloy sub-conical spindle whorl, possibly dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The weight has been crudely cast, with a generally flat top and bottom surface and a small central sub-conical opening running vertically from the top to bottom of the spindle whorl. The base is sub-circular in plan. The lead alloy is of an overall light grey colour; the surface has been scraped and damaged, probably due to the malleability of lead alloy while in deposition. It measures 11.7 mm high, 13.4 mm in diameter at base and weighs 11.35 grams. Although spindle whorls of this type…

A perforated lead-alloy weight of unknown date. The object is sub-conical in shape, with a slightly domed upper surface and a flat bottom. It measures 21.48 in diameter, 7.17 mm thick and weighs 13.66 grams. The vertical hole in the centre measures 5.83 mm in diameter. The weight has no decoration on any surface. The metal is light grey in colour. Weights of simple design were cast easily throughout the Roman to post-Medieval periods; therefore, they are difficult to date precisely. Cf.
