A complete Medieval to Post Medieval lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to circa AD 1100-1550. It is broadly circular in plan and plano-convex in section. The central hole is circular with an internal diameter of 9.8mm. A complete probable Early Medieval lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to circa AD 500-850. Cast in one piece it is comprised of a flat base with steep, conical walls and a central perforatio./ with a diameter of 10mm Though difficult to date without secure stratigraphic information, spindle whorls of this form are consistent with Walton Rogers form A1-2, dating to the early to middle Saxon period (2007).  Class: Walton Rogers 2007 A1-2

A complete, lead-alloy spindle whorl or weight dating to circa AD 43-1600. It is circular in plan and rectangular in section. In the centre is a circular perforation 7.8mm in diameter. One edge is signifcantly damaged. The top edges are flat and straight.  Spindle whorls can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time. However, however lead alloy spindle whorls of this type are normally attributed to the Medieval period (c. AD 1100 to AD1450).

An incomplete lead spindle whorl of Roman to Post-Medieval date (AD 43-1650). It is plano-convex in section.  The central hole is circular and has an internal diameter of 10mm. The upper face is domed and the lower face is flat. No decoration is present on either side of the whorl.

A complete probable Roman lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to circa AD 43-41. It is discoidal in plan and plano-convex in section with broadly straight edges. The faces are undecorated. The central perforation is is small, 6mm in diameter, indicative of a pre-Early Medieval date. Consequently, a broad Roman date is suggested.

 A complete Medieval to Post Medieval lead-alloy spindle whorl. It is plano-convex in sectiion, undecorated and has a large 9.6mm central aperture.   Lead spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the Post Medieval period and are difficult to date  without secure archaeological contextual data.  A similar example is recorded on the database under SUR-4CE7EE and is dated to between 1200-1700 AD. A somewhat corroded lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, c. 1200-1550. The whorl is circular in plan and biconical in section, with a medium-sized circular aperture at its midpoint. Both faces of the whorl are decorated with intersecting linear motifs, inbetween which are raised pellets. Preserved in rather poor condition with heavily flaking surfaces, it measures c. 31.11mm in diameter, 12.72mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 26.89g. A complete cast lead-alloy spindle whorl or loom weight of probable Early Medieval to Medieval date, c. 500-1500. It is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in section, with a flattened top/base and straight sides. At its midpoint is a large central circular aperture which extends through the whole object. Preserved in fair condition with a greyish white patina, it measures 23.49mm in diameter, stands 17.06mm high, and weighs 53.62g.
