A complete but worn cast lead alloy spindle whorl, probably dating to the medieval period c. AD 1000 - 1500. It is bi- conical in cross-section with a thick median band.  Both faces are decorated, but the degree of wear makes it difficult to see the detail clearly. One one surface a geometric pattern is evident inside a raised band running round the circumference. One the other the design consists of pellets and lines, inside a raised band around the circumference.  The central aperture is evenly drilled and is 9.7 mm in diameter.  The whole object is covered i…

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl, probably of medieval date. The object is bi-conical with a broad circumferential rim and a wide (10.4 mm) central perforation. Both upper and lower surfaces are decorated with raised lines at varying angles. Lead alloy spindle whorls are difficult to date as the same basic design was in use for a long period. The decorative style is consistent with others recorded on this database and assigned a medieval date. cf SWYOR-A34CA5, LVPL-DDE0C3 Diameter 23.5 mm, height 11.5 mm, weight 26 g

Medieval lead alloy spindle whorl, 37mm in diameter and 11mm thick with a weight of 44.56g. The object is circular in form and bi-conical in cross section. It has a central circular hole, 11mm in diameter which forms the central feature of its decoration. This consists of a raised 'lozenge' a rectangle with concave sides. Each corner terminates in a semi-spherical knop and in the centre of each edge there is a small projecting raised line which also terminates in a knop. The whorl conforms to Walton Rogers Form C which she dates to 1100 onwards.

A lead alloy spindle whorl (probably) dating from the Roman or Early Medieval period probably, about AD 43 - 1000. It is of Walton Rogers Form A1, having a D shaped cross section, and being plano-convex, however, it is oval rather than circular and of uneven thickness, casting doubt on its function as a spindle whorl. The central aperture is 3-4mm diameter. The small diameter of the central hole is thought to indicate an early date. The whorl is 18mm long, 15mm wide and 7.8mm thick. 8.07g. If not a whorl, it could be a perforated weight.

A cast lead alloy spindle-whorl, probably of medieval date. The object is bi-conical with a broad circumferential rim. Both surfaces are decorated with moulding: Four large pellets or knobs, between each is a cruciform shape having pellets at the end of each arm. There is a linear dent running across one surface. The well formed central perforation has a diameter of 9 mm. Spindle whorls are difficult to date but bi-conical ones are normally attributed to the medieval period. The cruciform decoration is also suggestive of a medieval date. The weight of 75.6 g may indicate this was u…
