A lead alloy probable spindle whorl of probable Roman date. The whorl was probably originally plano convex but is now very worn. The central circular perforation has a maximum diameter of 4mm. This suggests that it could be of Late Iron Age or Roman date, though this is an unreliable method of dating. The flat side of the whorl has a slightly raised rim round the central perforation. This is found on Roman Coppergate Type A whorls. The whorl was also found in an area where many other Roman objects have been recovered, so a Roman date is suggested. The whorl has a grey patina. It is 16…

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date, but possibly Roman. It is semi-spherical in shape with a slightly concave upper face and a domed lower face. This shape is consistent with whorls thought to be Roman in Walton Rogers (2007). The central hole tapers from 9.5mm on the upper face to 7mm on the domed face. It is full of soil. It is 12.61mm in thickness, 29.83mm in diameter and weighs 54.26 grams. Lead alloy spindle whorls are very difficult to date as few are found in datable contexts.

A crudely cast lead spindle whorl or circular perforated weight. It is D shaped in section, the upper surface being flat and the lower surface convex. The central hole is smaller than is usual for a spindle whorl of this diameter, being only 8mm in diameter. It is also thinner than many spindle whorls. If it is a spindle whorl it is most likely to be Roman or Early Medieval in date. There is no decoration. The whorl is 30.9mm in diameter and 6.6mm thick. It weighs 28.19gm. It is also possibel that the object is just a undiagnostic lead weight which could have been used for many purpos…

A lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is slightly dome shaped with a large central hole which is wider at the top than at the bottom. The sides of the hole are straight. There is a groove on the base round the central hole. It has a diameter of 23.2mm and a weight of 29.68g. It has a well developed creamy patina. Helen Geake writes: "Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, "The Medieval Household: Daily Living c1150 - c1450"; and Biddle, 1990, "…
