A lead alloy spindle whorl of medieval to post medieval date. The object is circular in plan and cylindrical. The spindle whorl has a central perforation with a central diameter of 7.5mm. The upper face has a raised outer rim which is curved inwards. The decoration steps downwards with the internal surface lower than the central and outer surface. Eight linear projections which taper in width to a roudned point have been folded inwards across the stepped levels to the central perforation. Complete undated probable spindle whorl. The whorl is cast lead and is a flat plain disc with a central perforation. Lead weights of this type, when found outside of an archaeological context, are notoriously difficult to date. It is rarely possibly to confidently assign a specific function to these simply made lead objects although those with a regular circular or spherical shape with a central perforation could certainly have functioned as spindle whorls. One surface is decorated with a mixture of transverse lines with two dots between and diagonal lines with dots; the other surface is decorated with diagonal lines forming triangles containing 0, 1 or 2 dots. Thick cream patina; area of damage to part of the edge. Diameter 25.8mm, thickness 15.08mm, internal diameter of perforation 9.8-10.7mm, weight 26.51g.

One surface decorated with radiating diagonal lines (much like the markings on quernstones), the other side has a more complicated design of lines based around a central four pointed star motif. The central hole does not taper, although it is slightly distorted at one surface. Light grey patina. Diameter 31.22mm, thickness 12.64mm, diameter of hole c.9.0mm, weight 52.90g.
