A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

An incomplete ceramic bi convex decorated spindle whorl, of probably the Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1100 to AD 1450. The spindle whorl is sub circular in shape, and lentoid in section. Neither face seems to be decorated. The central hole is circular in shape and has been cast / set roughly centrally. It has a internal diameter of 7.6 mm. The outer edges have been damaged. The ceramic appears to have a high quartz (sand) content and highly oxidised. The whorl measures 33.9 mm in diameter and 15.2 mm thick. It weighs 15.9 g (0.56 oz). The who…

A re-shaped piece of a samian vessel, probably re-used as a spindle whorl dating to the second or third century AD. Incomplete (a fresh piece missing) rough oval/disc with a hole discoloured with black deposit rather than burnt, a very micaceous fabric, SAMCG I think rather than under-fired SAMEG (but slip very thin and no other inclusions). Hole c.5mm diameter, the surface is chipped and spalled around the perforation. 10g. (Sherd ID 249)

A re-shaped piece of a samian vessel, probably re-used as a spindle whorl dating to the second or third century AD. Very abraded and burnt cup base, no slip remains apart from in the groove at the top of the foot-ring; possibly a Dr27 foot/base but really too worn to be certain. Only half survives, apparently broken across a ?drilled central hole, suggesting this base was shaped and re-used as a spindle whorl (sherd ID no 230) SAMCG

Pottery spindle whorl. Grey reduced fabric sandy fabric, probably made from a Roman Greyware base sherd. Flat-sided cylindrical discoid whorl with a central drilled aperture of diameter 8.1mm. The light material would make this object suitable for spinning a fine yarn, while the material and aperture size could commend either a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date. Chipped or nicked at one edge, and worn thereafter. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Roman to Early Medieval, 200-800 Diameter: 33.3mm, Thickness: 8.3mm, Weight: 11.45gms

A complete ceramic spindle whorl or ceramic bead, probably dating to the Roman to early medieval period, c. AD 43 - 680 . The object is circular in shape with a flat cross section. The upper and lower surfaces are flat. The central hole has been set roughly centrally, and has an internal diameter of 11 mm. The shape of the item would suggest that it has been specifically made and not created from a reused sherd of pottery. The spindle whorl or bead has been made from ceramic, with frequent fine grit inclusions. The surface carries soot and is weathered. The object has a diameter…

An Iron Age clay spindle whorl dating to the period 800 BC- AD 43. The spindle whorl is of unusual design and is reel shaped with two sub-circular discs at either end which gradually narrow to a 'waist' in the centre. There is a vertical hole pierced through the centre of both discs. The spindle whorl is made of a reddish brown clay with about two-thirds of the surface of both ends and a joining section across the 'waist' coloured black. There are numerous small to medium flint inclusions and a number of large flint inclusions. The spindle whorl is crudely made, although the surface i…
