A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

Fired clay spindle whorl fragment. Circular, probably globular with flattened upper and lower sides, object with a drilled [now] off-centre hole of diameter 6mm. Stained with pitch, paint or burning across part of its surface, possibly after being chipped. The small size would be suitable for a Roman spindle. Despite its large size, the lightweight material would make this whorl suitable for spinning a fine yarn. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 30.2mm, Thickness: 15.9mm, Weight: 13.48gms.

A re-shaped piece of a samian vessel, probably re-used as a spindle whorl dating to the second or third century AD. Very abraded and burnt cup base, no slip remains apart from in the groove at the top of the foot-ring; possibly a Dr27 foot/base but really too worn to be certain. An abraded fired clay spindle whorl of probable Roman date. It is circular in form, oval in section with a large central circular aperture. The whorl is formed from an abraded and slighty micaceous Roman fabric, possibly from a ceramic vessel or a fragment of fired clay tile. A base sherd from a Roman greyware ceramic vessel which has been perforated, probably to create a spindle whorl. The base, which probably formed part of a pedestal cup, is circular, with a flat underside. Part of the heavily abraded wall of the vessel remains, angling steeply upwards from the base . The circular-sectioned perforation is located off-centre, extending vertically through the base. The fabric is mid grey and has a sandy texture. Diameter: 42mm; height: 14.3mm; weight: 23.58g.

A ceramic spindle whorl dating from the Roman to Medieva periods (43 - 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is flat and sub circular with a circular hole through the centre. The whorl has been formed from a fine white paste sherd. It measures 32mm in diameter. Spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the Post Medieval period which makes them difficult to date without contextual evidence. This spindle whorl appears to have been made from a piece of Roman pottery and so a slightly shorter date range has been suggested.

Fired Clay spindle whorl. Oxidised fabric with abundant chalk inclusions, possibly comparable with Torksey Ware. A doughnut shaped whorl of Walton Rogers' form B, with central aperture of diameter 13.5mm. The aperture is lipped on one side, suggesting the use of a rod or spindle as a former before the object was fired. Despite its possible affinity to commercially produced pottery, this object bears light finger or thumb impressions, and was probably made as a 'one off', resembling a miniature loom weight in its form and material - though a loom weight would be at least twice the size…

Ceramic, conical object. It possesses a central perforation measuring 10mm in diameter and a flat bottom. Dr Kevin Leahy writes: it is most unlikely that this object was, as described, a 'Loom weight' and it was probably a spindle whorl. Dating is impossible on the surviving evidence.
