A biconical lead spindle whorl (overall diameter: 34mm) with central perforation (diameter: 10mm) that does not narrow more at one end. Both faces are decorated. On one side, there is what appears to be a raised branch-like design with one line splitting into three towards the outer edge of the artefact with occasional dots in between. The other side also has raised linear decoration, but of an elongated cross design which reaches to the far edge of the whorl. It is difficult to date these spindle whorls precisely, but the highly decorated ones like this example usually date to th…

The obverse bears an inscription of BONI FA[ ]VS PP:VIII, split into three lines, identifying it as a bulla of Pope Boniface VIII. Like the obverse, the pelleted border around the outside has mostly been erased by the edge being hammered out and folded over. The reverse depicts St. Paul, on the left of the seal looking right, depicted with a long pointed beard. St. Peter is on the right facing left and has a rounded face with beard and hair formed of pellets. Both faces are co…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 35.86 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 7.3 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated with a line of circular dots in relief, each within a triangular border formed by raised lines which radiate from the central perforation. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example wei…

An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy bi-convex decorated spindle whorl, of Roman to Post Medieval dating (c. AD 43 to c. AD 1650). The spindle whorl is sub circular in plan, and lentoid in cross section. Both faces have suffered from a moderate degree of abrasion, which has resulted in the loss of some of the decorative details.
